my friends in college used to have overnight A&A games - early games would go 12 hrs or more before it got harder to get everyone together for that long. Russia always proved to be key in the game - if they could hold their own against germany early on, Axis didn't stand a chance. One of the more interesting games we had, i started as Germany and discovered heavy bombers right away. Rolled right through russia, but couldn't quite break the UK. Eventually, an industrial complex in South Africa proved to be the difference even though I controlled all of eastern Europe, and Japan controlled all of western asia, with Russia controlled nothing. Japanese player was declared the winner for controlling a lot of Allied territory. Basically, several contries got displaced - US controlled a lot of Africa, Germany controlled Russia, and UK controlled Germany.
Liked it so much, we got Shogun and Fortress America too
Now there's a game I haven't thought about in years... Is is still out of print?
Yes, as is Conquest of the Empire. My brother and I are looking to sell our Fortress America, as it is a first edition from 1986 (replete with World Trade Center and Saddam-look alike on the box).
the computer game sucked - i beat it after three hours on the hardest level as UK.
on the board game, I am always UK, and always play it the same way. there is a website which explains how to win every single time. usually i dont do it that way - its no longer fun

A&A is a lot like chess in that regard--there is a canon of standard opening moves for each player, and responses to various moves. However, unlike chess, the odds are massively stacked against one side (the Axis).
Yup I played the PC-version for some time with my friends but I must admit I was never really keen on it. Just a nice thing to do when you're hanging around with chips and so on. I must say in my opinion A&A is cool but it lacks more different options. When you played two or three games it will become boring very quickly. You should have some options for diplomacy to sign non-aggression pacts like Japs and Soviets did and the neutrals should have an army so they can defend itself will make the game much more interesting and will surely bring me back to it again.
