Modern "correspondence" chess is very popular these days with numerous sites running.

    2 good ones are

    Stan's NetChess

    RedHot Pawn

Both allow play for free and you can play when you want/can.10 moves a day or 1 move a week..doesn't matter.
Another good site, and my favorite is www.itsyourturn.com. Members or non-members can play, but non-members are limited to 40 moves per day but can still play any number of simultaneous games. And they have not only chess but backgammon, stack4 battleships, reversi (Othello) and maybe a few others. they also have several variations of each of the main games.

I currently have 10 games of backgammon going, I play at home and at work during my lunch hour.

    Great site, check it out!

A 56K modem limits you, it has to be said.......FPS are out of the window. But RTS/TBS are still ok, so chess will work fine. At ICC your game is even automatically saved once you are registered should you be dropped.

dial up and rts are not a good mix doctor......you really want to play with fast connections for those types of games....and for fps...definitely

It's nice to have a fast connection for RTS but not compulsory. For FPS it is near compulsory. Just compare the proportion of Starcraft or AOK players that used modems with the same proportion for any FPS.

              I play chess.

You should get Chessmaster8000. It is compatible with msn messenger - you get a link their to Chessmaster8000. Dunno how it works.

Chessmaster8000 is the best computer chess programme if I'm not mistaken.

Haven't checked out 8000 yet but traditionally programs like Fritz have been stronger. Having said that for most of us a few ELO points difference doesn't make much difference.......features are what rule. Fritz has traditionally won there too, though Chessmaster has closed the gap in recent generations IMO.

You can play real time on dial ups but I wouldn't bother with blitz or any other short time control.Even with the Fischer clock, lag will just kill you.

I can't say much about modern chess engines other than Fritz drew Kramnik and Chessmaster 9000 beat Larry Evans. These weren't the programs a person may have at home(mutilple overclocked processors and such) but that is pretty good.Especially Fritz's draw with Kramnik

when you guys play here, do you move the pieces on your own boards after you post them ? i would assume so but not 100% sure..

I prefer using computer 3D chess-boards. I can replay the moves more easily, which gives you a better feel for where the opponent is headed. Static boards don't do that so well.

No we just draw the board on the wall with a felt pen

of course we move on our own board

Yeah people that play by email or equivalent usually have a board with the game set up on.

To SD I have to say I don't mind playing in 2d at all........you get used to it after reading a few books.

Some ppl play without boards. They remember everything in their heads. True story.

Where can I get those 3D chessboards SD?

Yeah blindfold is quite big now.......most of the top players can put in a GM performance without an actual board.

I don't know about worldwide, but in the UK there are even 2 blind players of very impressive strength.
