What i meant by 'puzzle based' was that once you've worked out your network or got your initial cash cow going you can sit back and wait. Now this is simplyfying it a bit but it just felt that after a while i wasn't playing against the AI but against the map.
A poor initial start with just a few industries/cities in the wrong place could find you really struggling. Even the strategy guide lists certain starting conditions for some scenarios if you want to have a chance of completing them or winning gold.
Once you've found a winning strategy there's often little reason to deviate from it.

Certainly, a good start helps, and certain starts help even more. The strategy guide is wrong, however - the author did not play as many games as I did.

I plan to buy RRT2 Platinum sometime in the nearish future - it's on a "3 games for £20" offer at GAME.

There's a selection. Quite possibly Shogun: Total war and CtP:2.

It's been a while now But let's see... I enjoyed RRT2, but I remember being disappointed somehow. Am I wrong, or was it limited replayabilty? No map generator? Anyone confirm this? Thanks.

The game has a very good (IMO) map editor that has a special event programming language and otherwise too a working interface. Maybe you just didn't like the genre?

Okay, if you have never played the original, RR2 is playable as long as you aren't expecting a real railway building game but more a financial type of thing.

Again, I found PopTop's weird design have all the details at the wrong places, making the whole thing very confusing and disorienting. IMO, a much better design is Avalon Hill's 1828 or SSI's Rails West!.

It's either on Markos' or Dan's hard drive. If they still have it.

I loved RT and RT2. I think my absolute favourite transport game would have to be Transport Tycoon deluxe, but RT comes close. I finally consigned my 5.25" disk version to the dustbin a couple of years ago with a real sense of regret.

Agreed. It was a groundbreaking game that firmly established MicroProse - and more importantly - Sid.

I'd just like to make a quick point on graphics- the Amiga version of RT had really quite pretty graphics, very sharp and yet being able to see a lot of territory. I was totally shocked at how bad the IBM-compatible version of RT looked in comparison, really...

RT2's graphics are still better than both of course, but compared to the Amiga version, it's not such a required step.
