After months of speculation, Nintendo finally makes the Nintendo DS system public.

May 11, 2004 - At Nintendo's press conference today, the company finally broke off the wraps of the Nintendo DS system. The system's been shrouded in secrecy since the company announced its existence back in January, but now all has been revealed officially.

The Nintendo DS is still the project name and is expected to have a new one as it gets closer to its release. The unit will feature a clamshell design and two back-lit LCD screens positioned vertically. Both screens are of the same resolution and are three inches diagonally apiece. Nintendo anticipates developers creating games with two independent perspectives, or the ability to hold chats with players during gameplay.
The lower screen will offer PDA-like touch capabilities, using either a finger or the included stylus pen. This enables users to activate an on-screen keyboard to send text, or draw directly to the screen. The touch screen will feature a tougher scratch-resistant film for extra durability.

Also built into the system is a microphone that can be used for several gameplay elements. The microphone is sensitive to any sound, and the software can be written to recognize anything from hand-claps to full-on voice commands. Nintendo even anticipates giving players the ability to chat voice over wireless internet.

That's right, the system will feature wireless connectivity, both using a Nintendo proprietary technology as well as 802.11 support for a wide array of network capabilities. Nintendo has mentioned the possibility of linking the system in hotspots all over the world for connectivity with players thousands of miles away. The system will even support single cartridge multiplayer much like the Game Boy Advance, where specially-written games can be sent wirelessly to cartridge-free Nintendo DS systems. The Nintendo DS system will feature Nintendo 64-like 3D graphic capabilities as well as 16 channel stereo support via the headphone port.

The system is currently on schedule for a late 2004 release in the US and Japan, followed by an early 2005 release in Europe.

We'll have way more on the Nintendo DS system as the Electronic Entertainment Expo begins tomorrow.

Well, I see three games presented at e3 that I'll I want to buy, and oddly they're all a way off being finished, and are all RTS odd indeed.

        Rome: Total War
        Warhammer: Dawn of War
Dungeons & Dragons RTS (working title)

Looks like I need to sharpen my mouse skills before 2005 comes round...

Looks like its the Virtual Boy revisited. By which I mean, a godawful design, rather than epilepsy triggering VR.

It's going to come down to the games and how they use the DS feature. The graphics look good so far, though...

Nintendo's running itself into the ground. At first it was sad, and now I just smile.

They're scaring away talented 2nd party developers with their demands to simplify games/"dumb them down". First Rare, and now Silicon Knights...

Actually, I'd say it was less them scaring people away than it was a certain Microsoft throwing certain $$$ their way.

Although its nice to see the latest sales figures for Nintendo (14m GCs sold) vs Microsoft (13.5m XBoxes sold) and Sony (72m PS2s sold)

                  Hmm...

New capcom title announced @ E3.

I knew all those invites sent to famous fighting game players was suspicious. I think theyre trying to actually get advice from ppl that KNOW how good fighting game works. Lets hope that is the case, because this game seems to potential for broken imbalanced gay (yet still fun) if that isnt the case.

                      my grammar sucks.
apparently the game is going to be 2on2

Capcom has announced plans to deliver a new two-on-two, 2D fighting game to the PlayStation 2. The game, tentatively titled Capcom Fighting Jam, brings characters from Street Fighter II, Darkstalkers, Street Fighter III, Street Fighter Alpha, and the little-known CPS3 title, Red Earth, into one game.

Fighting Jam is a two-on-two game, but you it isn’t a classic tag battle setup like some of Capcom’s previous games. Instead, the game lets you choose which fighter you want to take into battle before the start of every round. Characters maintain the same fighting styles--and in some cases, the same character sprites--that they had in their original game. The game will use the standard, Street Fighter-style six-button setup.

The character list currently looks a little thin, but Capcom has only announced two fighters from each game. Representing Street Fighter II are Ryu and Guile. Demitri and Felicia appear courtesy of Darkstalkers. Though she appeared in Street Fighter II, as well, Chun-Li is paired with Yun on the Street Fighter III side of things. Street Fighter Alpha brings Guy and Sakura into the fray, and Red Earth provides Leo and Hauser. The game will contain additional hidden fighters.

The game’s modes read like a pretty standard Capcom fighter mode list. Along with the standard arcade mode, where you’ll fight computer-controlled characters and eventually finish the game and see an ending, you can also select versus, survival, training, replay, and gallery modes.

Capcom Fighting Jam is currently scheduled for release in the fourth quarter of this year.
