Extremely fast RAM. It's usually ~10x faster than regular RAM. It has low capacities, but high speeds. It'll be used for the backbuffer where they actually do all of the drawing.
The Gamecube has 3MB of pseudo-EDRAM right now.
is that a regular dvd drive or hd-dvd drive or what?
Doesn't say, people expect it to be some form of blu-ray (HD-DVD).
Looking at those specs, I can't imagine myself owning a more powerful pc than that in 3 years, let alone a console with that much firepower. [/QUOTE]

Taht 'ventisular link be woo to clyck.
ps2 spec is like what? 400mhz cpu with like 32 mb of ram? Consoles are designed for sorely running games. and because hardwares are exactly identical to each other, softwares can be custom tailored to their specifications... meaning..
with specs like that on console... that spec is re - co*k - ulously good.
It'll probably cost around $400 to make, go on sale for $299.
I don't think it'd cost too much to make. When you buy parts in the millions, you get a price discount. The time this will go into production is mid-to-late 2005, and the chips will be made on the new 65nm process which makes the chips smaller and cheaper, and integrating 3 CPUs into one die will also reduce cost.
I agree, they are after market share, and will make the money back on volume and then on the software. With PC games not selling like consoles, they have to have a platform to market their games.
We're sorry, the voices in my head are not available at this time. Please try back again soon.
HEATHEN! DX1 was one of the best games ever created. DX2 is not so much.
“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

DX1 was one of the all-time best games. DX2 was not even worth downloading, although I must admit that I based that decision on the demo. Way to take a great game formula and kill it. I shudder at the thought of Thief 3 in these same people's hands.
Think happy thoughts, think happy thoughs...
I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

What's a R500-based GPU? Something like a 9800 XT? Or the next GPU by ATI?
The Radeon 9700 was R300 (DX9, 8-pipeline) , Radeon 9800 was R350 (DX9, 8-pipeline, but faster), R400/R420 is the chip coming out in a couple weeks (DX9c, 16-pipeline, insanely fast).
The next chip after that will be R450/470 (expected to be DX9c, 16-pipeline, tweaked and even faster).
R500 is the chip series after even that. New technology, even faster speeds. R500 is roadmapped to be used in high-end PC graphics cards in late 2005 at the earliest.
