EU is quite good, I heartily recommend it. Play any nation from 1419 to 1820, and far more realistically than the Civ series ever could dream of being.

Some games not mentioned here that a worth a look if you like TBS in a fantasy setting are the Heroes (of Might and Magic) series, and the Warlords series. Both are up to 4 I think.

I'd add Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic to that list. Closest thing to MoM that I've played since... well, MoM.

Are there any turn based games in the Medievel: Total war style? Real time has never been my bag, click fest's are not cool

The main map where the game is really played is turn based. The battles are real time. (unless you allow the computer to auto calculate, in which case you never have to enter battle)

Its not a click fest, you can pause during battle and take your time to evaluate the situation and give new orders. Also you can speed up time or slow down time if need.

In that case you have not played Dominions II. The best TBS since Alpha Centauri, you can find it here .

True. Now that I have my brand-spankin' new cable modem, I can finally download the demo and give it a try.

If you can find a copy, 'The Operational Art of War' is widely considered to be one of the best wargames of all time.

Victoria is great. However, it can have a steep learning curve (especially if you aren't familiary with Paradox games), and it's still being 'ironed out' out a bit. If you haven't already, I'd recomend playing Europa Universalis 2 or Hearts of Iron first.

It has the potential to become a great game, after the beta is done.

At the moment, we're alpha testing, except that we paid for it.

nice tip reminds me of heroes of might and magic

suppose i need to find a strategy guide though, managed to conquer around 30 provinces in under an hour and thought i was really kicking arse when i found out the commands for blood hunt and research ( yeah i know, left it abit late) but theres currently 3 easy AI's hitting me on all fronts beat 2 back but my moloch who had tons of experience has just taken a hell of alot of battle wounds, that will teach me to tell him to go mano et mano with the largest enemy monsters.

Any advice for good groups/battle strategies using just the demo races ?

Victoria is my least favourite full scale Paradox game (but that still means its better than Civ III.) I'm hoping Crusader Kings will be more my style. Its out soon and ordering direct from Paradox means they actually get the money for making the games instead of the publishers that notably fail to advertise them
To doubt everything or to believe everything are two equally convenient solutions; both dispense with the necessity of reflection.

Well, Pythium usually does well with emerald guards on the front flanked be javelin throwers set to 'fire closest'.

Jotunhiem is fairly straitforward. I like to use the 30 gold, 32 resouce axe wielding giants backed by whatever magical support I can put together (perferably cold based; that way stray shots won't harm your cold resistant giants).

I havn't played much Machaka, what other races are available in the demo?

abysia, ulm, c'tis, arcoscephale, pythium, jotunheim and machaka.

The armour the abysians get is great for just having a few humanbreds tie up the enemy until your flails get close and then just watching 10 stomp through 30 independants.

gah £45 to buy it in the shops ... think ill wait a year or see if i can get it 2nd hand or copied. Stupid jacked up prices
