      • Act Two (continued)

The village tribunal was hastily assembled soon after Theben's horrible discovery.

"I guess we'll have to try this again", Jon Miller said, rather forlorn. Three villagers, after tonight four, dead within a few days. The carnage was having a visible effect on the poor citizens: people didn't talk much to each other, got out of their houses only when absolutely necessary, and a few had a weapon of some kind with them at all times.

The arbitrator sighed and continued. "Spiffor's corpse was found by Theban -"

        "Theben", the tailor corrected.

        "Yes, quite right, Theiben -"

        "Theben!" he persisted.

        "Now, Thiben -"

"Jesus Christ people! I've been living in this village for my entire life and you still can't pronounce my name properly! The-ben! T-h-e-b-e-n!"

"Son, this isn't the right time or place. Now, according to Doctor Guynemer, Spiffor was suffocated."

"Yes, with his own pillow - it had saliva stains", Guynemer confirmed.

"Well then. Time to cast our votes and take care of this problem once and for all", the Lord concluded.

Again, the villagers reached a majority before all votes were cast: Alva received three, but with four votes pending, DrSpike the writer already had eight.

"DrSpike the impaler. Cute", DrSpike said, shaking his head haggardly.

"Do you want to die in any specific way?" Jon asked.

"As long as it's not too painful, do what you want", DrSpike said somewhat spitefully. "But I must tell you one thing: I am not the Mafia. See you in the netherworld."

Pave glanced at the others who nodded. He then grabbed his hunting rifle and shot DrSpike right between the eyes. Sleep didn't come too quickly to the remaining villagers that night either.

          • Act Three

Alva got up with the sun and wandered off to Jonny's farm, where he was supposed to help HongHu and Vlad Antlerkov out with the chores. He was wondering who should become the permanent caretaker of the place - he certainly felt up to the task, as he had helped Jonny out before and knew most of the secrets of growing and grounding wheat.

When he approached the main building, which had the day before yesterday been a scene of murder, he heard a blood-curdling scream.

"HongHu? What's the matter?" he yelled and ran to the building. What was expecting him there was a gruesome sight, well worth the sound HongHu had made.

On the ground near the entrance to the house was Vlad Antlerkov's bloody corpse, pierced through the chest with one of Jonny's pitchforks. HongHu was standing next to the body, looking silently into its glazed eyes. "Vlad the Impaled", DrSpike would have said, had he been alive that is.

                • Interesting:

Everyone killed by the Mafia has an "o" in his name. Both men killed by the villagers have a handle that starts with "Dr".

                  • I vote Duke o' York too. I may as well go with the docpile for once.

(And he has two "o"s in his name, tis high time he died. )

p.s. For a second I thought that HongHu was going to be the dead one. But as long as I'm going with the obvious (and very possibly wrong) clues I figure the mafias might actually want to keep me alive.
