By the way Michael, how did you become moderator?
A bit of a long story - Ming and MarkG decided they needed another body to deal with the rowdies of the Off Topic forum, so they launched and April Fool's "joke" where I was supposed to be a pretend moderator and use my "special charm" (like that of a Drill Instructor in the army ) to intimidate the masses. It worked, and part of the "joke" was to sucker me into a job I wouldn't have taken in the first place. (One of the unwritten rules here seems to be that anyone who seeks to be a moderator is disqualified ).

The effect worked well, because Ming suddenly became the nice, "reasonable" guy. Moderating GalCiv and MOO came along because I play those games so I check the forums at least occassionally anyway. Ming plays Civ II and III MP, so he's busy in those forums, but I don't play those games, and he doesn't play GalCiv or MOO that I've heard, so it just turned out to be a convenient division of labor.

      Ming reasonable guy?
I wonder what you did in this first month of yours to make Ming appear reasonable

You play MOO and GalCiv then. I played MOO1 and think it is the best game ever. I play it still sometimes.

But I primarily like turn based multiplayer games like chess and civ2. Strange you don't like civ2, being so chess like.

Ming tends to do things like warn people. I figure they already know they're out of line.

I like Civ II, but I was through playing it (and never got into it MP) before I came to this site. I did play SMAC PBEM's a lot, but then got too busy to keep up with them when my son was born.

I loved MOO1 and the original Civ - when I first got Civ, a couple of days after it came out, I stayed up over 60 hours straight playing it.

I've always been a turn based player - from chess to Napoleonic miniatures (a guy I knew in Silicon Valley had his entire garage converted to a sand table, assembleable terrain features and storage for miniatures so you could play full army scale maps with 10-12 guys as the Army commander and Corps commanders. ) The only RTS game I liked well enough to keep around are Sid Meier's Gettysburg (even though it has a lot of flaws) and the original AoE.

I have never seen you banning anybody.
On the other hand, Ming has banned many.
And many times he tends to do it impulsively.
And if banned people are too proud, they never apologise and may never return too.
I am not claiming Ming's banning people arbitrarily. Just that he's way too harsh sometimes.

Pictures are not working so we can't post the position right now. We'll do it when DanQ fixes things.

The things I liked the most (and I still do) in MOO1 are the enormous tech tree, the fact that not all techs are available to your research (great idea!) and the smart AI. The AI is actually far smarter than the AI of some later games (civ2 for instance where the AI is simply a punching bag).

And the voting, and losing the vote and going for the final war.

Ming usually makes it visible. I ban people by stealth most of the time, or just with a little sign off line like "see you next week" More like a sniper, whearas Ming has to do it like an armor puke in his Abrams tank.

Yeah, both fun. And the MOO1 AI was much better than most games, although I got annoyed at those bogus fleets of 32000 little ships. Although black-holing them was fun.

Sorry, I've been babble posting in OT on occasion, but finishing up with moving and now moving my office has made me braindead. :tired:

I played Moo2 a lot - I liked it less than the original (I've never seen a sequel that's had the same impact for me as the original game), but more than Moo3, which I just found tedious after a while (I hate the stupidity of AI governors, and I can't help but micromanage ).

I have a Moo2 CD, around, but not the original MOO and I've seen it Moo2 advertised in bargain bins and such not too long ago.

What I liked the most was customisation of the races, a feature not present in MOO1 and more advanced diplomatic options and, of course, multiplayer, although I never had the opportunity to try it.

The leaders were a novel idea , although I didn't like the fact them being limited to 4 only (if I remember correctly).

The thing I hated the most was the endless build queue in zillions of my colonies. Tedious micromanagement compared to MOO1.
