I thought AH released some of their old PC games like Kingmaker and 3rd Reich as freeware not that long ago? Oh well, maybe I'm wrong.

You may be correct... But the problem was the link... because not all games on that site are freeware

Kings and Things, a beer-and-pretzels boardgame.

Down with the King, an interesting game of court intrigue.

I know that bit, and links to the front page are a big no-no, but I thought maybe the direct link might be okay. Oh well, no biggy. No harm done.

Yeah, it's too bad that you can't always tell which ones are ok and those that aren't.

And that's why all I did was kill the link and not add any of the usual extra "punishments"... I knew your intent was not to promote stealing software... but to offer up a way to get a game that probably is just freeware.

However... since the site is a no no... had to kill the link.

Are there any sites that distinguish between the two so it would be ok to discuss here?

All abandonware sites contain mostly games the copyright owners probably wouldn't care about. But not always, and therein lies the problem.

Plus, it's hard to actually get a developer to admit a product is abandonware, even if they don't list the software as their's and haven't patched or supported it in years. If it starts making a comeback all of a sudden it's a "classic title" and they start screaming for money.

And that's the problem with such sites. I have never heard of a site that truely only has "official" abandonware on it.

Too bad. It makes it tough for people that want to remain legit.

I guess the only thing to do is come to a place like this, confirm that the particular game is in the public domain, and then search out the "grey area site" and DL. Doesnt seem like a big problem if youre only doing this occasionally for that rare public domain must-have title.

I don't think Alexander's Horse did for either of them.
