It's a fairly common shape related to turbulent mass flows, whether liquid, gas or plasma. If there's enough humidity in the air, you see them all the time, especially with small military aircraft (due to their relative speed/wing size) from control surface adjustments on final approach. Speed brakes like the "clamshell" brakes on the A-6 series make rather spectacular ones.

The organic one is due largely to the charge of the electron. Most people don't realize that most complex molecules have a degree of twist to their shape, and even very simple ones like water or ammonia are distinctly three dimensional.

MtG chooses to make a rational analysis.

I choose to panic. HEEELLLLLLLLLPPP!!! It's a sure sign of an impending alien invasion! Run for your lives!!!

it's cosmic grafitti. god didn't do it, it was some drunk-ass stoned teenage alien from tralfamadore who used his spacecraft in a creative manner.

It's clearly mRNA being made. Everyone knows from their high biology books that RNA is red and DNA is blue. Just like your spleen is orange, and your intestines are bright green.

The model is far more smooth than the data shows. That means whatever forces have effected the swirling aren't of the same scale as the gross effect. Large dark matter clumps, or sharply bounded dust clouds?

MtG, huh. Btw, did you know you have three 'e's in you nick? Fascinating!

Zkribbler, panic is a rational choice when we're obviously all doomed. It gives one something to do in the last bit.

Q Cubed, Drunks in space, that's a good thing. They might not want to blast us to bits, they might just want a drinkie.

DaShi, you are the most knowledgeable among the Apolytoners.

Straybow, tell us more about this "gross effect" of which you speak. Hmm, on second thought, perhaps MtG would be better versed with the subject.
