Why is the pope celebrating easter?

in Greece Easter is a much more important and celebrated holiday than Christmass. There is a "ceremony/ procedure/mystacogia/mystification" which goes on throughout the Holy Week.

One of my favorite parts though is seeing the obligatory in every easter Jesus Christ of Nazareth series by Jefirely (sp?)on TV

Ok, so it is about the resurrection of Jesus.

Could this have been a reason for Catholics to collaborate with the Germans? (Jesus being resurrected on the same day as Hitler was born)

I hate catholic easter. My romanian upstairs neighboors got really drunk and started arguing and making noise through 6 o clock in the morning.

I just checked it with the CIA factbook and only 5.6% of Romanians are Catholic. The rest are Orthodox. Tough luck

I don't care about their religion of course, it's that they drink a LOT and have some trouble adjusting to life in a multistore building.... They're good people though. I'm friends with one of them, I sent my old PC to his son in Romania. He also wanted a greek CD with "Learning the Colours" that he saw on TV, so I bought it for him as a birthday present. If only HE only was living in the above appartment and not his owf of friend and his wife and child of said friend who are NOT YET HOUSEBROKEN

If you could tell they were romanians, they were probably orthodox. If so, they celebrate Easter at the same you do, if ever. There is also that thing christians celebrate one week before Easter, I don't remember it's name in english, something to do with flowers and Jesus entering Jerusalim. Since there are a lot of romanians named Florin, Florina and other variations of the romanian word for flower, it's a perfectly valid reason to throw a party. Perhaps one of your neighbours' name is Florin.

Also, I think your neighbours were abusing the thing. You're not supposed to make any excesses in this period, especially with regard to food and alcohol.

The palms used on Palm Sunday are burnt and usually used as ashes on the following Ash Wednesday.

Re: "pagan" easter, the only pagan connection of Easter is the name, which I believe was derived from the name of an ancient Teutonic goddess of spring. That's why my priest(I'm Orthodox too, BTW) always calls it Pascha, which is the correct name, etymologically related to "Passover" in some language or another. Believe it or not, the resurrection of Christ was a big holiday long before Hitler was born. I don't know where you're digging that up from. The east-west difference between celebration dates is due to the fact that, by the Western method of reckoning, it is sometimes placed prior to the end of Jewish passover. The Orthodox believe it is unacceptable to celebrate the resurrection of a man who, according to the bible, wasn't even dead yet. Remember, the Last Supper was the Seder, or however it is you spell the big feast at the end of passover.
With that said, Romania is at a peculiar east-west junction. A big chunk of the country belongs to the Uniate church, which acts mostly Orthodox but owes allegiance to the Pope, or some such. Kinda like the Malkites further east. It's quite possible that the Romanian neighbor is Catholic and Orthodox, in a funny way.
And it's perfectly acceptable in all traditions to feast to (moderate) excess at the END of holy week, i.e. Easter/Pascha. You're not supposed to be getting plastered and disturbing the peace, no, but more peacable revelry is actually customary. After the Rush service on Holy Saturday night, the Orthodox have Agape Breakfast, shoving down ham, sausage, cheese, butter, wine and extremely rich bread at 3 AM. It's great fun. I'm rather looking forward to it.

Me too. There's quite a lot of festivities and traditions going on throughout the Holy Week, but I don't have time to write them right now. It is Pascha here to BTW. I think, although I'm not sure, it derives from Hebrew meaning "Passover".

ALthough I'm not religious, but it's tradtion.

BTW We always go to get the Holy Light from the CHurch (the more religious attend the Litourgy too )and then go home for the agape dinner.

At the givingof the Holy Light (lighting the candle of the other, the kids rush to light their candle from the priest and then it is spread to all the congregation in this fashion candle by candle) everyone embraces and kisses the other even if you don't know him/her and you say "Christ has ressurected" and the reply is "Veritably He has ressurected".
