What about that forgotten superstar? Oscar Robertson? Bob Cousy was pretty good as well .

I'm sure that a greater player will probably surface... But until then, MJ is still number one.
You misunderstand me.
Kobe or LeBron probably WON'T be better than MJ, but people will say it because they see it. Basketball is very 'here and now', and people don't remember history like they do in other sports.
MJ isn't the best, he is just the 'now'. Wilt was better and so was Russell. I don't think MJ was that much better than Magic or Bird.
That was my point, there was really no one to compare MJ to.
Wilt vs. Russell.
Magic vs. Bird.
Mj vs. ?
ACK!
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust!
its his legacy to ruin and washington is an utterly horrid franchise for the past 20 years. and now ppl talk about them making the playoffs. sure they failed but omg to even mention it is huge improvement. also the last time MJ played to a non sellout crowd at home was like in 1988.
and plz for the luv of god dont hate on one of the greatest athletes of the 20th century simply cuz he doesn't want to stop competing. its not manner.
Was Cousy the one who shot underhanded foul shots?

I never said you were wrong .

Which is why he looks like a such a god like figure.
The man even had a gatorade commercial that sang "I wanna be like Mike" for christ's sake..
He could be eighty years old and fans would still be watching him, applauding whenevr he made the jump shots... and media would go berserk over the shots he made.
That was my point, there was really no one to compare MJ to.
So, then, all the rest of the NBA players got mysteriously worse than past decades' players… I understand it all now.
I used to think MJ was overrated, a fad of fandom. Then I had a roommie who was into hoops and watched it on TV all the time. He even had a couple tapes of Dr. J and Wilt Chamberlain. MJ was awesome at his peak, not just marginally better than his peers. Definitely better than the great players of the past.
I've also seen some tapes of games from further in the past and there is no question that gains in athleticism have taken place with each generation of basketball players. That MJ stood out so much considering the changes in the game says it all.
MJ was the greatest B-ball player ever. Period. End of discussion. It wasn't just his atheletic ability that was so awesome, it was his desire, his need to win.
I recommend for anybody interested to pick up a copy of David Halberstam's Playing for Keeps to understand just how special MJ really was.

I agree completely. MJ was the greatest, though not as good perhaps as some of his fans think. But his stats on both offense and defense are incredible, as are his wins, championships etc. There are other players I have liked a lot more as a fan, but MJ is solidly the #1 competitor IMO.
The sick thing is that he became bigger than the game, which makes all of this lame play and hoopla truly annoying at this point. Get out and let the game find its way again.
He's got the Midas touch.
But he touched it too much!
Hey Goldmember, Hey Goldmember!
He isnt done he could play 5 more years and still keep with kobe, mcgraw, and carter, and sava he didnt ruin Sava he helped it. Hey they almost made it to the playoffs this year.

Washington had an enormous amount of talent before Jordan started meddling. Stackhouse nearly led the league in scoring at Detroit, but then he comes to the Wizards and is second fiddle to Jordan. And what does Jordan do? A mediochre 17 pts per game or so while shooting 40% at best. His defense sucks, he's a step slower than everyone....
