  • David Floyd's momma....

    From CNN

CANTON, Massachusetts (AP) -- In her cluttered yellow house overlooking a serene pond, Alice Copeland Brown packs her latest box of goodies for the war front -- Oreo cookies, biscotti, Q-tips, goggles.

Then she taps out an e-mail to her son in Iraq.

"I'm going to be arrested tomorrow," she tells him.

From a tent somewhere in the desert comes the cryptic reply.

"That's nice, Mom," writes Army Maj. David Floyd. "Just keep protesting as long as you keep sending food."
The coincidence in names made me

Anyone have any interesting or humorous stories about someone else with your name getting in the news?

    That's funny.

One thing I did think was a bit odd:
So it was natural for her son to join the service too -- and for him to thrive. He loved the marksmanship, the camaraderie, the weekends training with his unit.

Neither mother nor son ever expected him to go to war
Long time military family, joins army, in reserves... doesn't ever expect to go to war? Well, they must have known it was possible.

Anyway, interesting article, aside from the DF coinkydink.

I ended up with a gun in my ear during a traffic stop in Oakland once, because someone with my name had a recently issued arrest warrant for armed robbery. After they checked, eventually the info came back that the one they were after was shorter, heavier, way older and black.

Man killed after wounding two officers in South River
              12/21/00 7:21 PM
SOUTH RIVER, N.J. -- A man enraged by an argument with his mother ran through his neighborhood firing a shotgun Thursday morning, grazing two bystanders before exchanging shots with police. He wounded two officers before being shot dead, authorities said. The injured officers, one of whom is the town's police chief, were in
critical but stable condition following surgery, and are expected to recover. The gunman, Edward Abrams Jr., was believed to be a lifelong resident of this Middlesex County borough of about 14,000. Abrams, 31, was jobless and lived with his mother, who was unhurt. The nature of the dispute was not immediately known, Middlesex County Prosecutor Glenn Berman said. Berman gave the following account: Police got a 911 call at 10:36 a.m. reporting a man with a gun. The call did not come from the mother. Chief Wesley J. Bomba and Lt. John Bouthillette responded, since they were in the department's temporary headquarters in trailers only a few blocks away. Abrams had already fired several times. One pellet grazed the back of a motorist on William Street, Timothy Matchett, 37, and another went through a window and grazed the neck of Caroline Ramos. They were treated and released from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, about six miles away. When Bomba, 56, and Bouthillette, 39, drove onto William Street, Abrams pointed the gun at them. The chief got out of the car and was struck in the right groin and upper left shoulder. He was able to fire three shots from his .40-caliber Smith & Wesson handgun. The prosecutor did not know whether the chief or Abrams fired first. Bouthillette was either in the passenger seat or beginning to exit when he was struck on his right side, sustaining injuries to his kidney, liver and diaphragm. He did not fire. Two officers in a car behind them, Eric Gartner and John McKenna, got out and chased Abrams into a parking lot at the park, where Gartner fired one shot and Abrams collapsed. Abrams was killed by a single shot that entered his body under his left armpit, but it has not yet been determined which officer fired the fatal shot, Berman said. Bomba, on the police force since December 1967, became chief several months ago. Bouthillette joined the department in 1986.
That's my name (including the Jr.), I live in New Jersey, and I was 33 years old and unemployed for most of 2000.

              It was an interesting week...

Yeah - at least people knew he was dead, and not on the run.
