Correct! In my Japanese class, my sensei (teacher) explained all this. I guess you can spell it 'ji' because it does sound like it when you speak it. Some ppl spell it w/g and other w/j.
I've never heard of the modified Hepburn system. What's that?
Do I have to download the Japanese character program for windows in order to view these characters or is it already in windows?
(sorry, I'll stop the threadjack)

--"in windows, you can get the kana character by typing "gi" as well."
You must be using a different version of Windows than I am ^_^
ji:
じ
gi:
ぎ
They are two distinct characters. Ji is a modified shi or chi. Gi is a modified ki.
They don't sound the same, either. Now, the combined sounds still give me trouble, but these two are pretty easy to distinguish.
--"I've never heard of the modified Hepburn system. What's that?"
One of the main romanization systems. It seems to be the more popular one, since it's more intuitive than the main alternative, the modified Kunrei-Shiki.
Either way, though, I still don't see how the two can be interchangeable.
For that matter, it's not a good sign that you're learning that in class at all ^_^ You really should have the Kana pounded into you before you get to romaji. From what I've been told, it just plain isn't very common.
Now that I think of it, though, maybe your teacher isn't teaching standard Tokyo Japanese. Might want to find out if that's a dialect version.

Which version of Windows? If you've got 2k or XP, you just need your Windows CD and you can install the IME.

I don't understand this poll:
Does South America stand for Native South American cultures or for modern days South American countries?
Is Meixco diferent enough from others countries of South America to be a separate choice?
Where are Portugal and Spain? Must I remember you that Portugal and Spain colonized a lot of America and some parts of Africa and Asia (Portuguese)?
And, BTW, I agree that a Roman culture is a must for this kind of polls (or change Greek to Roman & Greek)Trying to rehabilitateh and contribuing again to the civ-community

As for romanji, my sensei figured that it would be an easier transition if we went from spelling Japanese in English, then move on to Hiragana, Katakana, then Kanji. Unfortunately, I forgot a lot of my characters and the meanings.....we don't really speak Japanese at my house anymore either. I fear I'm losing my knowledge.
