  • Oh, so THAT'S what they were singing...

I just had one of those moments that I will never live down unless I divorce my wife and leave the country. The only thing missing was Catherine Zeta-Jones and a cell phone.

Standing in the kitchen, kind of "singing" the old Stevie Nicks song "Edge of Seventeen" under my breath when my wife said:

"Wait. What was that you just sang?"

    "Oh, some Stevie Nicks song."

"I know that - it's the only one you like, but what were the words that you were singing?"

"Just like a one-winged dove, sing a song...."

"HAHAHAHAHA!!!!! You idiot!!!!! (she can say this to me because she loves me. Or so I'm told.) What the hell makes you think that's what's being sung?"

Defensively: "Uh, well, because that IS what she is singing."

"Think so, boyo? Let's Google that and find out."

Well, my abject humiliation soon followed. Apparently, from the beginning of time, Ms. Nicks was singing "Just like a WHITE-winged dove". Apparently, years of drug use made her slur her words (or so I want to so desperately believe).

So, what lyrics have you misheard? Did you embarrass yourself by your lack of knowledge?

I can't remember any times that I've been embarrassed by mishearing lyrics, but I have had some unpleasant mental images burned into my head thanks to misheard lyrics...

            From Anne Murray's "Snowbird":

"And if I could get over it I would fly away with you."

It's really "And if I could, you know that I would fly away with you."
"THE" plus "IRS" makes "THEIRS". Coincidence? I think not.

Incredibly, that's much better than the original.

Look for the lyrics for John Cougar Mellencamp's Jack And Diane.

See how many different ones you can find.
