Syria as bad as Iraq?
Hmm... where have you that information from?
Anyway... we can all divide countries into axis' of three and three. One Axis of evil, which Syria could not join since an axis cannot consist of more than three members, and North Korea and Iraq had already formed the axis, and asked Cuba to join them, right in the face of poor Syria... So the angry Syrians started the Axis of somewhat evil along with Saudi Arabia and Iran. Then a European country got so mad as to form another Axis of not particulary evil, but do eat frogs. Of course nobody else would join this axis so it was merged with the Axis of indeed very evil hangovers with Russia and Finland.
Ok, the point is:
Everything is relative, so is the term 'oppression'.
