Oog. My head hurts just reading that bloody story. Have you considered just saying "screw it" and moving on? I can't imagine anything you could say that wouldn't just make the whole situation even more of a tangled mess.
BTW, if you're gonna do stuff like this to yourself, you might want to consider becoming a eunuch. Probably less painful in the long run. If you REALLY liked the girl enough for her to be happy and wouldn't have looked out for your own best interest. (ie, keeping your roomates friendship(sp)/keeping her in the dark about him sneaking around on her) maybe there would have been a remote possibility that you would have had a shot at her.

Second. Be honest. Girls don't like being treated like they're toys or property. If you like someone do tell them so, and then let THEM have a choice on what they want to do.

Third. Screwing or falling for your roomates girl isn't cool. Why didn't you tell your friend to outright dump the girl so you could have a shot at her? It makes you and your roomate look like sleazy bastards by playing her into your own motives.

And noone wants to be with a dumb, egotistical, lying, cheating, sleazy bastard. That's why you didn't get the girl.

Strangely enough I have experience with a similar situation in the 70's (although I was #4, a friend of #1 #2 and #3). If #1 is a close friend he'll dump #3 or maybe offer a #3some. After all, he doesnt really care about her, right? If #1 is not a close friend or doesnt want to dump her just say adios and find another roommate these Peyton-Place things can go on forever. It gets really weird when #1 marries #3 but still screws around with #5 while #3 screws around with #6,7,8,9,10,11....... while #1 is off fighting for freedom (thats what happened then).

In general, long time friends are more important that the (flavor of the month) girls. In a couple of similar situations, we have always been able to convince ourselves that if the girl slept with both of us than she must be a tramp and not worth our attention.
Yes, not necessarily true, but useful in helping us repair any hard feelings. I'm still good friends with one of the guys after 30 years.

Now if the girl is THE GIRL, then do what you must. Or if the friend is just a guy, also do what you must.
