  • US mistakes Slovenia for partner in war

While this reads like The Onion, it's actually taken from a reputable news source:

    --------
    From: http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/s819115.htm

The United States has mistakenly named Slovenia as a partner in its war against Iraq.

Slovenian Prime Minister Anton Rop says the US even offered his country a share of the money budgeted for the conflict.

He says when asked for an explanation the US State Department admitted Slovenia was named in a document by mistake.

Slovenia now will not get the $7.5 million it was mistakenly offered in the US war budget.

    --------

I must say that it was nice of the Slovenians to point out the mistake before they got the money

I've had just about enough of Slovenia.

Anton Rop, you better be paying attention to the war. 'Cuz after we get Saddam, you're next.

I would have taken the money and not said anything else on the matter.

Apparently, this was after protests in the capital. Maybe the government got caught doing something helpful to the coalition but small and decided the $7.5 million wasn't worth the politics.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Croatia on the other hand was told that it

            "will pay the price"

for the answer to the Americans :" We will support the action in Iraq if it is backed by UN" - how very democratic from the land of the free

and the American ambassador actually praised our corrupt and nationalist party ( post-Tudjman guys) for giving open support to USA... for those not in the know - a typical USA reaction - we will support anyone as long as they support us - in the same way they supproted Saddam as long it suited them.

Conan O'Brien is doing a wonderful series on the Coolition of the willing. He started with the Marshall Islands and then Ethiopia, Eritrea. Very nice.

My favorite member of the 'Coelitition of the Willing' is the Solomon Islands (population: 300,000). Seeing as the place has been in a state of anarchy for over a year, it's rather impressive that the US figured out who the prime minsister is and got his or her support.

Well I guess 7.5 million USD i pocket money will be a welcome addition to personal wealth of the representative assuming that this is the smallest sum US pays out for cooperating.

I read in Croatian paper that Macedonia is also playing along with Americans, even offering to take in refugees.

In return, they want backing from USA to use their constitutional name in international relations. They think it could work out.

Meanwhile Greece is doing its usual 'I protest milord!' act and antagonizing USA. We will see how far this will go. Sadly, I can't find an english link on the name thing.

That sounds reasonable. FYROM is a stupid name anyway.

Well supposedly USA already calls them Macedonia in internal documents, but Greek lobby is too strong for the real thing.
