Marines Raise U.S. Flag Over Iraqi Port

UMM QASR, Iraq (Reuters) - U.S. Marines raised the Stars and Stripes flag over the new port of Umm Qasr on Friday after taking the installation in the face of only light resistance, Reuters correspondent Adrian Croft reported.
Croft, who is traveling with the Marines, said the U.S. aimed to use the modern port on the southern fringes of Iraq as an entry point for humanitarian aid into the country.

After calling in British artillery support to break Iraqi resistance that pinned them down on the Kuwaiti border for two hours, the Marines made swift progress to the new port.

The old port of Umm Qasr, some one mile distant, has not yet been taken, Croft said.

Attack aimed at Kuwait's Ali Al-Salem Air Base

KUWAIT, March 21 (KUNA) -- Military sources say the missile attack at
approximately 13:00 local time was directed at the Ali Al-Salem Air Base.
Three loud explosions were heard at the airbase, expected to be Patriot
batteries intercepting the missiles coming in from the Iraqi border.
Ali Al-Salem Air Base is located on the Kuwait-Iraq border in the north of

according to www.irak.ru there have been at least 24 casualties until now, possibly around 40. three armored vehicles had a close encounter with landmines, british got some casualties the minute they landed on faw and so did americans during several ambushes staged by iraqis so far.

also, no scuds have been fired and the craters made by missiles on impact suggest those are not scuds
