A question about driving and such to those living in smaller nations

Yikes. Here in Israel anything in a distance of 100 km is far, far away.

Speak for yourself. Tel Aviv is 100kms from here, and it is less than an hour's drive (depending on the traffic around tlv)

The only place I consider to be far away in Israel is Eilat, and it's 400 kms away, or so.
around 5 1/2, 6 hours drive. that IS far.

Well, as a big country with many cars in it, don't you think the US cars should stop consuming so much oil!!?? Of course, it's bad for the oil companies so...

In Belgium congestion is a problem, just like in big countries, only difference is that our entire country is so badly structured and lain out that we lost a lot of open space, advantage is that we are pretty much "land of the roads" . There is roads everywhere, roads, roads, roads, and the cars driving on them of course Annoying as cars make a lot of noise, when you're living next to such a busy road! Finding a nice and quiet spot to live is a very hard job here (and hellaciously expensive too!)

gawd, people just cannot pass an hour without bashing the US... If people would want to, they'd buy cars that use less gasoline. Actually, many people do.

As a resident of the country with (probably) the highest motoring costs and most congested roads in europe I say good luck to the US if people are actually able to travel by car.

My journey to and from work each day is a 15 mile round trip, mainly on quiet country roads. One of my reasons for quitting my previous job was the traffic congestion around York that I had to battle every day just to get to work.

We used to do a lot of walking in the country . However when it takes two hours to get 60 miles into the Yorkshire Dales or North York Moors to do four or five hours walking and then over two hours to get home again it just isn't pleasant. I will have to stick this job out for a year or so for professional reasons but after that we are planning to move somewhere not so awful for traffic (Mars looks like a good bet ).

I've (seriously) heard that one of the few man-made things you can see from space are the highways of Belgium, due to their density and incredibly intense lighting.

The furthest I've ever driven in one go is from my home, southeast of London, to Durham in the northeast of England. About 500 km. I've also driven from Paris to my home, which was about 400km.

I would never normally drive more than about 50 km from where I live, there is no need.

That was a long time ago.
Now it is much more evenly spread.
