  • Canada's Sea King Helicopter Fleet

Well, over 40 years old and they require 30 hours of maintenance for every 1 hour of flight time.

A couple years ago when a ship sank off the eastern coast, over a dozen lives were lost because of "deficient" night imaging systems on the Sea King rescue helicopters that would spot survivors and lose sight of them right after. This is according to the DND's own report, not my own assumption.

The Sea Kings are also forbidden from engaging night operations with US Forces because their equipment is so outdated to be unsafe for everyone involved.

And of course a couple weeks ago, a Sea King crashed onto the deck of a Canadian Navy ship after takeoff because of mechanical failure.

For 20 years now, critics have demanded the replacement of the helicopter fleet. Conservative PM Brian Mulroney signed a $5B contract in 1992 to replace the fleet, and as soon as Chretien was elected he proudly announced that he'd cancel the deal, even though it cost Canadians hundreds of millions of dollars to cancel only to STILL leave us with an outdated fleet (I'm not entirely sure on that figure, feel free to correct me if it's too high or low).

The DND is now covering it up: Downgraded the report previously mentioned (which recommended replacing the fleet) to "draft" status and claimed it would require further study, 2 days after CBC questioned them about it, after pressure from Ottawa.

When will Ottawa stop putting lives at risk with the aging Sea Kings?

What should be done...who can smack the Liberals into utilizing common sense.

The Sea King is a good workhorse medium-heavy lift helo, but not the original versions of them. You guys have never gotten newer models, avionics upgrades, etc?

Helo maintenance hours per flight hour are always bad - in an ocean environment, 12 hours maintenance to 1 hour flight time would be a very good standard, but 30 hours is pretty bad.

Ted - they're large medium multirole - SAR, ASW, personnel transport, medium lift for supplies, just about everything.

Chretien appealed to the general idiocy of the Canadian public.

Canada thought it'd be a great idea to scrap the evil-conservative's $5B plan to modernize the mainstay of coastal rescue/defence and military helicopter. So Chretien spent $500M (from CBC this time, this is the actual figure) to cancel the agreement, only to have the maintenance costs continue to skyrocket on us.

They spent $80M again in 2000 to keep the reamining 30 Helicopters flying for longer, long past their expected date to retire...

Chretien's hinted at spending $5B now to replace the helicopters recently after all this bad press, but the kicker is that $5B buys him less numbers of worse helicopters than Mulroney's original deal.

Chretien's main election platform in 1993 was to cancel the helicopter deal and the GST. He canceled the deal, he left us with the GST. What a great man.

Yeah, inflation hits hard, and the contractors that make your different choices hat make them are looking to a lot of replacement orders from the US.

Of course, the bad news is that you can't indefinitely maintain a rotary wing fleet - with fixed wing aircraft, you can generally extend the airframe life with a main wing spar replacement, but in helos, the transmission cases tend to go with age, and if you're in one when that happens, your ass belongs to Jesus. There's no autorotation if your tranny goes to ****. The only question is whether you'll get killed from the impact, or if one of the blades will go through the crew compartment, or if the tranny case will explode and you'll get it that way.

                      Another Liberal bashing thread.

If you're going to attack the Liberals, at least get your facts right. There are Lots of problems with the Sea Kings and the Liberals are idiots for not replacing them, however...

                          Actually, the DND website says:
Eventually, ---- SAR-configured Cormorants will enter service with Greenwood's 413 Transport and Rescue Squadron.
Sounds like most still use the Labs...

The Canadian military's specific SAR use Labs and eventually Cormorants, but that doesn't matter.

The problem is the Sea Kings, and the Sea Kings more often than not have to perform SAR on ships out at sea.

They don't count? Tell that to the guys rescued with these helicopters.

The Force's have about a dozen in service on the east and west coast. They replace the old Labradors.

The Cormorants have already done search-and-rescue missions involving flights of more than 1,500 kms.

And yes, the Sea Kings should have been replaced years ago.
