According to an article in the Sydney Morning Herald, the US military has no intention to use a MOAB bomb in Iraq, and it was just a propaganda stunt. According to the article, there are two reasons for this:

    1) MOAB type bombs are can only be carried by slow flying C-130 transport aircraft, and are only useful against troops out in the open. As troops out in the open are likely to have the fairly limited AA weaponry needed to shoot down a C-130, MOAB bombs are impractical, especially as the US already has plenty of weapons which can do the job more safely.

    2) They don't actually have any more of the things.

It's big purpose is simply for the effect it will have pyschologically on enemy troops.

I saw a little comic about the MOAB, the dialogue going something like this:

Frenchman: (referring to MOAB) Nice bomb.

          American: Thanks.

          Frenchman: Certainly is big enough.

          American: (smiling) Yup, sure is.

Frenchman: Yeah, wonder what you're compensating for.(snicker snicker)

          American: You.

          Anyway..

                  Don't.

On a side note, Eglin isn't too far from the USN base I'm at. I heard the damn thing go off when I was out in town.

So, they dropped a few MOABS on Bagdad after all then, and they'll probably drop more as their methods by necessarily become more blatantly brutal and colateral-packed.

Have you been watching your televisioning-machine? two sreports so far of huge blasts rocking the entire city, and huge mushroom clouds rising... not to mention that Rumsfeld himself said on Friday that they would be deploying 'The full Package' including MOABs.

So you believe it was MOAB....that is not the same as a proven fact.

The Coalition believes this war is a good idea, and right now their trying to make the enemey believe they have lost, belief is in alot of things- don't dismiss it.

In this case the belief is reasonable as that was what was said by Rumsfeld, and later backed up with detonations true of MOAB.

I think those were only Tomahawks and JDAMs they used in Bagdad. The MOAB has a klling range of several hundernd meters. The shots of those explosions were taken from a distance of several hundrend meters. If they were MOABs, the camera would have been destroyed.
