Grad School and Rejection

how many grad schools did you get rejected from before you got accepted somewhere?
i just got my first...cali state in fresno....but now i'm fairly certain that if they rejected me, UT and johns hopkins will reject me too...
actually, i'm frozen with fear that no place will accept me or that i will be unable to support myself or something...

I was pretty worried though. My course grades weren't the best but I scored very high on my research so I had top notch recommendations.

Where are you trying to get in (and in what field)?

UT is a state school. You think it will "reject" you ?

U of Texas is good in physics (among the top public schools), so to be rejected from there would be no shame.

I don't know how it is in what dm's doing.

i'm doing poetry...Cali was a state school and it rejected me. i'm in honors. i got a 1200 on the gre..nothing to scoff at. fresno told me my poetry wasn't good enough. UT takes 10 to 12 students per year..so chances of me getting in, especially NOW..are dim. but i think my first two choices are san diego state and university of new orleans....i'm just scared i'm not going to get in anywhere or have enough money to get myself settled....

I didn't go on to grad school, but I have a good friend who applied to a bunch of PhD programs and was rejected by nearly all of them (he applied to mostly top 10 schools, and the acceptance rate is really rough). He will most likely accept an offer U Chicago made him involving a year long masters-level program (though he has a masters degree already) that will help plug any holes in his application so he can get in next time 'round.

Anyway, don't worry, be happy. I remember my college applications: I got 1 rejection, 1 waitlist, and then a week later got 4 acceptances on the same day. That was a good feeling.

I have a friend who is going to Yale next spring for grad school. She got reject from a lot of other schools, far worse than Yale. Suks to get rejected from Fresno, but what program are you appling for? I have had friends get rejected from Fresno, and get accepted to place like Temple and Duke...

I'm having a tough time getting around the idea of someone being a grad student in poetry. What would a poet grad student do?

Rejection from one uni means very little. It could mean you suck, but it could just as easily mean that they were looking for other styles of poetry (or something). For all you know, they may have wanted someone wearing a beret who could snap their fingers loudly

i can teach.
and although there may be very little money in writing, i might..just might one day, have a book published. HOWEVER, i ALSO write novels and screenplays. it's just that my MFA is focused on poetry.

Also, back to UT; it matters if you're in-state, or out-of-state, doesn't it ?
