  • US military tests 21,000 pound bomb

    See: http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/03/11/spr...oab/index.html

Today, the US tested its biggest conventional bomb, the Massive Ordnance Air Blast or MOAB, weighing 21,000 pounds. The heat released creates a mushroom cloud 10,000 ft high!

Dang, that is one huge bomb!
'There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way. The war we fight is not against powers and principalities, it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain.'"

Not yet, but the military will probably release video of the test soon.

Military officials say they hope the MOAB will create such a huge blast that it will rattle Iraq troops and pressure them into surrendering or not even fighting. Officials suggest perhaps the Iraqis might even mistake a MOAB blast for a nuclear detonation.
Is that really a good idea, to make them think we're using WMDs on them?

What possible tactical use can it have for use in IRAQ. I doubt their army is going to bunch up in the middle of the dessert for us to use on them. They're going to me hiding amongst civilians whenever possible, and I doubt it's use will be authorized on a possible civilian target.

Only possible use if for fear.

Admittedly not having read the article, does it say, anywhere, that plans were to use on Iraq?

That's more of a China bomb.

Why China? Why not a North Korea bomb?

Gen. Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, did not rule out use of the MOAB, or "massive ordnance air blast" bomb, in a war with Iraq.

As you say, I hope he means it only to be as intimidation.

I think you can drop a bomb like this down on fortified troops and it will seriously break their will to fight.
