  • Karzai visits Washington, nobody cares

    Anyone remember this?

US puppet and former Unacol employee Hamid Karzai apparently visited Bush on Feb 27, but it was all but ignored by the media. Quite a difference to the last time he came to Washington, when he was the star of the show.

Compounded by the 'clerical error' of aid to Afghanistan being forgotten in the budget, I think it's safe to say that Afghanstan has served it's purpose and is being unceremoniously dumped.

Will Iraq suffer the same fate?

I saw a huge half hour piece which NPR did on him at the time. I have no idea where you got the idea he was ignored but it is obviously not a good source. As I recall there was some controversy during Karzai's visit because he asked for more money but several high ranking Democratic senitors told him he'd have to publicly admite that the Afghan state would be unable to proform its duties without more aid money.

Of course the Dems were fishing for an issue to hammer Bush on and I think it is ugly partisianship at its worst that they'd try to tie support to Afghanistan to domestic politics. I'm disguested but not surprised...

Sandman does that sort of thing alot. You just have to humor is ill temper and once in a while you find out about a good point he makes; the problem is all the idealogical baggage you have to sort through to find it.

It was fairly big news here.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I knew he came. IIRC it got some decent press in the Post. Just because you didn't hear about it doesn't mean it didn't happen...

Regardless, it is appropiate to compare Afghanistan with Iraq.

Fools want to label Afghanistan a failure after only a year because it doesn't look like Disneyland yet.

Well guess what that's what ****ing happens when a place has been obliterated for the past 20 years.

Uh, is it too much to ask for a central government that more or less has control over the whole country?

Considering the Afghan Army isn't even remotely up to strength yet, yes.

So why isn't the Afghan army up to strength?

A better question is, why didn't the US forces disarm all the warlords?

                            In due time Urban.

The US worked WITH the warlords to whoop Taliban ass. We can't just turn around and impose ourselves on them yet without the whole place falling apart.

That's the mistake the Russians made.
