  • The State of Computer Gaming.

    1) TBS and Sequalitus

I've been on the Moo3 forums, and I see the same comments and pervasiveness as I did on the CivIII forums. The problem is with sequals. The TBS genre has seen mostly sequals and it is killing the entire genre. The problem is that the popular games (Civ2, Moo) were simple and easy to get into and easily addictive. To entice the players of these old games, the sequal makers attempt to add features, which make these games complex. They say look, it is just like your games, but with more stuff!! This 'stuff' usually isn't integrated seemlessly and adds a lot of complexity. This results in a loss of the simple pleasure of these original games.

    2) The Rise of RPGs

Can it be? People actually want stories in their games?! Heaven forbid ! It was only a matter of time, right? While some just want to 'shoot stuff' and this is the basis of multiplayer, a lot of people want an engaging story for their single player exploits. Diablo started us on this trend by combining great action with rpg elements. This was continued (and perhaps perfected) with Deus-Ex. Now stories and levels are gaining sway even in traditional real time strategy series, such as Warcraft III. Is it only a matter of time before RPG elements invade every popular game? Not to mention the great popularity of true CRPGs themselves. Baldur's Gate series, Fallout series, Arcanum, Deus-Ex, and most strikingly in the present, Morrowind have all been successful. Who'd have thunk it?

Fallout was wonderful . But I think it is Wolfenstein 3D to Baldur's Gate's Doom. Fallout was wonderful and allowed Interplay to publish Baldur's Gate, which kicked the door down.

well the thing that i like about fallout is that it wasnt set in the whole fantasy universe with orcs and goblins and elves. The thing that i want to see in RPGs now is something along these lines again, where it takes place in a universe that isnt A. Fantasy B. Some final fantasy rip off.

I want to make a computer game called "Xtreme Sim Tycoon". It will put the player in charge of a computer game company where he takes one halfway decent idea and copies it relentlessly until it's lost any value it once had.

I'm a hardcore RPG player so I wouldn't consider diablo a RPG. Now games like Arcanum and Fallout are real RPG games with thick plots and character development. Arcanum really had some original ideas, I loved that game. Baldur's Gate is a psuedo-rpg. I hope games like Civilization and MOO don't become more RPG oriented, they should stay as wargames. Scenerios can be added for story value.

Imran.. even fighting games have story plot now! and one even has a story plot that is just as good as any avergae games! (soul calibur, cough cough ).

RPG for me will always be Final Fantasy I - VI, Breath of fire, chrono trigger... etc. All the new fancy graphic RPGs just seem.... different to me. If I dont have loony graphics, funky midi sounds and the works.. it will never be an rpg for me.
                  :-p

Sequels are not always bad. A lot of players like SimCity 4, commenting that it is what SimCity 3 should have been.

"They say look, it is just like your games, but with more stuff!! This 'stuff' usually isn't integrated seemlessly and adds a lot of complexity."

I agree with this. "Creeping Featuritus" is a bad thing. To me, the new Galatic Civilizations is taking the correct steps for 4X games: players should only make decisions at the top level.

You my friend need to remember a bit further back into video game history. The AD&D gold set, The King's Quest series, Zork, and numerous others were games which had great story lines where the player assumed the role of the main character (and sometimes his friends).

Diablo is only a recent game series (recent compared to things like Zork from the 1970s or King's Quest from the 1980s) which is a copy of this theme with new bells and wissels added.

Zork etc. are not RPG's, they are adventures.

Certainly though, the most famous early RPG's include Ultima and Wizardry.

                          RPG's = ghey!

The new version of Day of Defeat comes out soon, as well as a new Counter-Strike! RoN looks decent, and we've only about 7 months until the new Madden and NHL2004....

                          Things are looking good!
