Yep, that's how I get personal experience with a lot of nice places. I have no problem paying the big bucks the second time, if I know I'm going to enjoy it.

Most people in urban environments, however, rely on restaurant reviews. Zagats is indispensible to any New Yorker or resident of DC. That's because the sheer number of restaurants is overwhelming, so some sort of guide is needed.

If a restaurant gets booed by Zagats, it's a bad restaurant, and its business will suffer.

Ah Boris, but Zagat's doesn't work that way: some one I knew in college got a job with Zagat's, and they are trully a survey: they collect the opinions of a large number of people and then use those to rate: they don't actually go to restaurants and judge the product, only popular opinion.

As for the point: It is Sad the man killed himself, but if the guides took his rating down cause they felt it was the right thing to do, then they are at no fault.

That's a surprising way to proceed, yet it's interesting. Are there only notations / very short "reviews", or are there deep reviews from the clients' impressions ?

The reviews are very very short: perhaps they put a a couple of sentences from a couple of people. Zagats has to get through hundreads of places, and that is without reviewing about half or more of the eating establishments of the city like Pizza and Chinese takeouts and samll local places.

They rate restaurants in three categories, food, service, decor, on a 30 point scale. The best I have seen anyone get on any of the three is like a 28. Anyhitng over 20 is good. Most New York restaurants, if they recive a nice rating, will post it.

Well then, he cared too much for what others thought. The guy has a hotel in France...sell it to a German and go somewhere, like the Philippines...don't kill yourself. Silly bugger.
