For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio

As you all know, the Royal family of Britain are the wealthiest landowners in the world. Either they pay us an exorbitant sum of money, or we will make it seem as though Prince Charles has had an affair, and would therefore...

Actually, it's much worse than you think. I've done some research on this, and I've discovered that there's not a single English King living today. It that just some weird coincidence?? I think not!

Liz is nominally rich in the same way that she is nominally powerful, alot of the stuff she has got is hers because she is queen and therefore it can be argued she is holding in trust for the state. Obviously she does have some money of her own but she is not a billionaire like the saudi mob.

On the point of giving royal assent to bills, the last time it was refused in the UK was 1707 IIRC Queen Anne vetoed a bill regarding the setting up of militias. If the queen did that today Parliament would vote her out and yes they can do that. Parliament is the soverign body in the UK and it has to approve and accession.

A few facts about the UK monarchy.

Most of the major Royals get an allowance called the civil list, paid from the state. Every year there is a report on who got how much and how many visits or functions they carried out. The Queen usually does the most work, followed by Princess Anne. Prince Charles is probably the biggest landowner since his estates include quite a lot of Cornwall.

The Royal yacht used to be paid for by the state, until it was sold off. The government foots the bill for the aircraft and helicopters of the Queens flight used for Royal visits.

The Queen has no direct power. She has to sign the papers for new laws. Even our House of Lords cannot block new laws if the Commons really want to push them through.

Interestingly Tony Blair has to go and see the Queen once a week and report what he is up to. Technically she appoints the Prime Minister so if the PM resigns, he/she has to go and see the Queen to do so.

I think the Windsors are pretty good value for money. Especially Prince Phillip for saying what other people only think. A couple of years ago he visited a centre training guide dogs for blind people and commented "whatever next, eating dogs for the anorexic?" (Hint: it's a Princess Diana joke!)
