Are you trying to argue that it's OK to lock people up for as long as you want if they are stupid and don't know what's going on, or even just old and confused?

It seems to me that exercising a right to an identity hearing, if offered, would be the thing to do if I was claiming mistaken identity.

Well I've never heard of an identitiy hearing and I'm reasonably knowlegebale on the law, why would a 72 year old engineer form Bristol no about them

It sounds like he has a better claim against the South African governement and the British Consulate than he does against the FBI if he wasn't informed of his rights.

Of course. He should have the privilege of not being held for 3 weeks without charge, just like everyone else.

Perhaps the FBI next time they are looking for fraudsters in the US, might think twice before arresting a man form Bristol in England

Also the FBI have already apologised which implies some sort of liability.

I don't know why I'm even arguing with Boddies about this. Stupid of me.

It was the SA police who arrested him not the FBI and the reasons for that arrest have already been stated.

The FBI said consistently that they had the right man, even when the evidence pointed obvioulsy the other way.

I ahve no problem with them holding him for a day or 2 maybe even 1 week at a push but 3, thats just daft

What evidence did they have until the arrest of the "real" Sykes? Remember Bond waived the identity hearing.

If we are going to quible about time, where was the British Consulate in this mess? Watching the cricket isn't an acceptable answer this time.

I'm sure the SA and British consulate could have helped more, they are all implicated in locking up an innocent man. I would sue all of them at once.
