  • Virus warning - new threat

    From McAfee:

    W32/Lovgate@M is a MEDIUM-ON-WATCH mass-mailing worm, that
spreads via network shares, and drops a remote-access trojan.
The worm is also capable of sending a reply to all new
messages found in the user's inbox (Outlook and Outlook
Express). The infected email can come from addresses that
you recognize and may contain the following information:

    Subject: [content varies]

    Body: [content varies]

Attachment: [It will attach itself to the message
using one of the following names:]

    fun.exe, images.exe, news_doc.exe, s3msong.exe,
    pics.exe, billgt.exe, midsong.exe, PsPGame.exe,
    hamster.exe, setup.exe, tamagotxi.exe, joke.exe,
    docs.exe, searchurl.exe, card.exe or pics.exe

Maybe a mod could top this for a while so people get to see it before it sinks into oblivion.

        a) avoid using MS outlook*
        b) don't open attachments unless you know what they are

how hard are those two things to do? the first one, maybe a bit more difficult, but the second? really, people...

The latest Outlook doesn't let you open .exe files in the first place.

you know, there's something to be said about not letting stupid people use the internet... i'm sure if no stupid people were on, we wouldn't have as much spam, or as many virus alerts, or as many chain letters...

I know, that many here are anti-M$. And I do acknowledge their attitude - if they have a point.

I can still remember the days only 13-14 years back when I used words not to be written here due to the fact, that nothing produced in a spreadsheet could be used in a wordprogram. And any decent presentationprogram should be used on a Mac. No "connections" between any programmes at all (except csv/plain txt if you was extremly lucky).

              So "dear" Q Cubed:

Delete your a). That is not ONLY a MS Outlook problem.

Change your b) to a) as that is perfectly correct.

New b): Think first - act second - that will solve most of your problems.
First they ignore you. Then they laugh at you. Then they fight you. Then you win.

                dear birdman, i'm not anti-MS.

                So "dear" Q Cubed:
Delete your a). That is not ONLY a MS Outlook problem.
people who use eudora, mozilla mail, ximian, opera mail, and webmail didn't spread some of the earlier .vbs viruses.

granted, since this one is .exe, it's not just confined to outlook; except, see, look at the warning from McAfee:
The worm is also capable of sending a reply to all new messages found in the user's inbox (Outlook and Outlook Express).
so don't pounce on me... i'm just saying there are other programs out there to manage mail too. it's just, by and large, most use outlook/outlook express, and although i don't have a problem with them using it, perhaps all of them should upgrade to the newest one, rather than leaving old, more vulnerable clients lying around.

Hell, I have even taught my parents not to open exe's.
I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

You'll be surprised, particularly when the system is configured not to show the extensions.
