Oh that is bloody ridiculous! If the uni could get their head out of their arse for once they'll realise that they have f**ked me around enough in the past and I wasn't going to go running after their mistakes...

Sorry, but I don't think it is ridiculous. You knew perfectly well that they had made a mistake and yet you said nothing and kept the money. Did you think they would never notice?

If you asked me to give you £10 and I gave you £20 by mistake, would you keep quiet about it? Probably not. Why? Because that would be immoral and you're a better person than that. The same principle applies here.

Upon finding out they had been paid triple the normal amount most people would think "Holy ****! They're gonna be pissed when they find out about this! I'd better tell them about it now and get it sorted out before they come knocking on my door asking for it back."

They're going to be pissed? They deposited large sums of money in my bank account, and quite frankly, if people want to deposit large sums of money in my bank account, I'll gladly oblige

Believe me, with the f**king around I'd had with my PhD and the consistent late payment of my grant, my conscience wasn't pricked. People should learn to do their jobs properly. They should consider it a lesson well learned

So you're defense is going to be "Since dealing with the University was such a pain over the past few years, when I received the money I decided that it was their problem, not mine and if they cared, they could fix it, not me."?

Well, that sounds precisely like that is what they are doing. Now that they are fixing their mistakes, you owe them 3,000+ pounds... according to your rationalization, anyway.

So you feel like you deserve the money 'cos they ****ed you around?

They certainly won't see it that way and neither will a court.

No, my issue is, my conscience isn't pricked. I viewed it as a very handy and cheap loan. If they want it back, they'll have to have installments because I do not have a permanent job.

And stop being overly moralistic. If you suddenly saw that kind of money in front of you, would you just give it back without a second thought, especially from an organisation who had made your past couple of years hell. Right or wrong, my conscience was not pricked - I was paid a pittance.

We're not being overly moralistic. We're just telling you that your reasoning will not stand up in court.

But I've made them a reasonable offer of repayment. I would be surprised if they took it to court, and if they did, I may consider countersuing for the distress I endured during my PhD.

And your resources to launch the countersuit will be... the 2,000 pounds you have left from the University's mistake?
