What is to prevent GWB from vetoing Clinton if he is proposed for Secretary General? Any GOP President would be under tremendous pressure from their base not to OK that.
In theory it would be fantastic to have a former US President at the helm of the United Nation, unfortunately the president in question is Bill Clinton and there is no telling what he would be like.
As for why Clinton was a bad President, see the recent thread on rating the Presidents since FDR. He certainly isn't the worst president we've had by a long shot though..."I'm moving to the Left" - Lancer

Considering Clinton's statements so far on the Iraq situation, I'd think Bush would prefer him tremendously over Koffi Annan.Originally posted by Shi Huangdi

Perhaps. But OKing Clinton could have severe political consequences with his own base. Also keep in mind Bush himself is a Conservative Christian, and that one of Bush's major themes for his campaign was restoring dignity to the white house. It's highly likely Bush himself has a personal dislike for Clinton. And keep in mind Clinton might want to run for the Senate someday, so it could be the case that his Iraq statements are to try to stay within the American mainstream.Originally posted by Boris Godunov

Though it would be funny seeing Clinton having to go to Bush on his knees begging for approval. I also wonder how long it'd take before Clinton got with one of the UNSG staff..."I'm moving to the Left" - Lancer

The WND report said Kofi Annan might be pressured to resign early.Originally posted by Boris Godunov
Wait--you seem to think that Bush will be the one making the decision.
If Annan serves out his term until 2006, it's quite possible Clinton will be getting an easy approval from a Democratic president."I'm moving to the Left" - Lancer

That's not true. Chinese theft of nuclear secrets happened earlier during Reagan years. There was an active military technology transfer from the US to China before the 89 Tiananmen Square massacre. Then in 1995, a guy giving out as a Chinese agent walked into one of the American consulates saying China had stolen lots of nuclear secrets. Finally in 1999, they locked up Wen Ho Lee for alleged spying. It turned out that the FBI had lied in that case keep him locked up. He was declared innocent and received a personal apology from the judge.Originally posted by Dissident

Since Clinton would easily be the most pro-US secretary general that could conceivably take the position, Dubya would most likely approve him."Spirit merges with matter to sanctify the universe.
