    Why?

    Because the idea of alien life that visited us covertly is solipsistic and irrelevant. If it does not matter one way or the other, we have to assume that the most elegant case (no visitation) is right.

                  I reckon when you talk about "alien life," most people wil get the idea of little men zooming around in flying saucers, not fungus sitting on rocks on a planet out there.
