I have heard talk that Germany was up for consideraton for an invitation to become a permanent member until this recent fiasco with NATO and TURKEY. The talk is that they would now never get by an American veto.

As to my preferences should we begin from scratch:

US, EU, China, Russia, India, Japan, Brazil, Egypt, and Indonesia. The UK and France would have to give up their votes in favor the EU. The EU should also have a seat in the GA.

France and UK both have places on the council. Can you name me one country that has more world wide influence than eithier (with the exception of US) ??

(Don't get me wrong...the French are whining punks, but they do have worldwide influence)

Australia = To give Oceania SOME representation.

France, UK, & US all have large presences in that region. Not to mention that Austrailia has the same head of state that the UK does.

The diplomatic influence of France and Britain is a direct effect of their permanent seats on the Security Council. You can't use the influence they gain from the Security Council as a reason to keep them on the Security Council...

I TOTALLY disagree. Way before there was even a thought of the UN, Britain and France weilded vast influence in the world. British and French colonial influence shaped the economic destiny that we experience today. Much of that influence still abounds in their former colonies. Let's face it...they controlled a large part of the world's land, people, and economies at one time.

The key phrase being "at one time". I don't think we should be handing out permanent seats on the Security Council based on a country's past glory.
