CAMP LEJEUNE, North Carolina (CNN) -- Two U.S. Marines arrested last weekend on charges of plotting an explosion at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, had been absent without leave for two weeks when police picked them up, a base spokeswoman said Monday.
Lance Cpls. Richard Morrison, 21, and Richard Thomas Medders, 22, were arrested Saturday in Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania, along with Morrison's girlfriend, Janna Rebecca Lynn Smith, 27. They were charged with criminal conspiracy to cause or risk a catastrophe, and making terroristic threats and bomb threats, Pennsylvania State Police said.
Police said the three had downloaded information from the Internet on making explosive devices and said they were going to use them at Camp Lejeune, where the men were based.
"They were both in the 'U.A.' status since January 24 of this year," said Gunnery Sgt. Michelle Smith, a Camp Lejeune spokeswoman. "It means that they were 'unexcused absents.' They were not supposed to be gone."
Morrison and Medders served in the 2nd Force Service Support Group, which provides combat support, said Staff Sgt. Jay Connolly, a Camp Lejeune spokesman.
Morrison's mother, Audrey Lincoln, said her son and his friend were on leave and were due back at the base Wednesday.
In an interview with CNN affiliate WBRE-TV, Lincoln blamed the arrests on her daughter, Morrison's sister. She said the daughter was angry with the family and had invented the accusations.
"She called the cops ... and said that they were here making bombs, that they were going to blow up the base," Lincoln said. "My daughter's nothing but a liar."
Police confiscated the hard drive of Lincoln's computer, she said, which Morrison and Medders had been using. Lincoln said there is "nothing on it," but District Attorney George Skumanick said otherwise.
"You have another witness that overheard these things also independent of [the daughter], plus you have the items that were downloaded from the Internet."
Skumanick told CNN that no bombs or weapons have been found.
The three arrested remain in the Wyoming County Correctional Facility in northern Pennsylvania. Tunkhannock, the county seat, is about 25 miles northwest of Scranton.
I went through training at Ft Polk, so I DO understand the motive. However I'm army, and even better cavalry, and therefore reasonably sane and far above such antics.
Actually this sort of thing must be expected of mere marines.

I can remember the day I joined the Army and there was this fellow who totally failed the ASFAB. Naturally he was upset that the Army wouldn't take him so the recruiter was trying to cheer him up by saying "Don't worry son. You could always join the Marines. They'll take anyone who can spell their name right and a few who can't".
It's so true. The dunces and social misfits all end up in the Marines.
