I can't believe you ask a morality question, oh hater of anything south of Des Moines.
Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

He also hates Texans and Australians, he does diversify." ~ Braindead
In any case the answer is yes 90% of the time. Believe it or not I do treat people as I like to be treated. At work I don't go saying bad things about people behind their back. Even though the coworkers I talk to do it all the time. As soon as someone leaves the conversation they start making fun of them. I don't do this.
That idea is the basis of all my political, ethical, and moral beliefs. I treat others how I expect to be treated... but it isn't an all encompassing doctrine of behavior. I judge each situation individually. But I'm human and make mistakes.
I try as much as I can to treat others like I'd like to be treated ; or at least not to hurt them like I'd hate to be hurt. By the same token, when I hurt someone, I would consider it fair if someone does me the same in the future.
Consequently, I may hurt someone by doing something that I would like to get : for example, I enjoy being frank, and my friends being frank with me, but not everybody enjoys it
This principle is at the core of my political beliefs (such as the support to welfare state) and helps defining my social behaviour (such as sharing as much as I can on a p2p network). A really important value everyone should teach thei Children IMHO.

You mean there are ways you would like to be hurt?
Because when you said, ". . . not to hurt them like I'd hate to be hurt . . ." that seems to imply that there are other ways you would like to be hurt?
A lot of Republicans are not racist, but a lot of racists are Republican.
Not exactly : there are some things that will not hurt me (like talking excessively frankly), but that will hurt other people. I tend to measure others by my own stick, so I generally do to others what I would like them do to me. But in some circumstances, by doing so, I hurt them.
There are also occurences when my egoism or shortsightedness takes over, and I hurt others for my sake. It is weakness.
