    you are just another country

Of course we are. And we're less powerful in a lot of situations than some think. But we're not just another country in the same way that an EU country like France is.

Germany is very important. Ignore them at your peril. But they will fall into line.

We've already ignored them for months on Iraq policy and who cares whether they fall into line. What's in it for us? Are they going to write us a check?

Russia is becoming independently strong quickly.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

The United Nations is a reflection of humanity — at times you love it, other times you hate it. Sometimes the U.N. is smart and wise, other times it's idiotic and short-sighted. I can only hope that the better qualities win out in the end, especially in regards to the Iraqi and North Korean situations.

With that in mind, the United States should remain a part of the United Nations.

(P.S. Thumbs up to Colin Powell ... I thought he did a fine job of presenting a compelling case about Iraqi intransigence in regards to the inspections and WoMD.)

The problem really is of the Administration's own making through some pretty oafish diplomacy since 9/11.

AH - That is too charitable a characterization of my country's current diplomatic standing and efforts, I'm sorry to say.

Well in fairness to them (what am I saying!!!!), the real problem is messages that played well to the US domestic audience (people like Lancer) went over really badly to the international audience, especially the "we'll go it alone and hunt them down ourselves if we have to" message.

It was hard to get the balance right. Almost irreconcileable given the vengeful and grief stricken US mood after 9/11. The new Administration simply didn't have the foreign policy skills to strike the right tone and its instincts, I'm thinking here of people like Cheney, were always unilateralist. Those were given free reign. Just my reading of it.

                  Damn Horse,

That's actually very good analysis and an angle I hadn't yet considered.

I don't suggest we "go it alone" by any stretch of the imagination. We're going to go in with nations that support our stand like the UK, Australia, a bunch of europeans, the Philippines etc...

What I suggest is we don't go in with the UN monkey on our back. Lets rid the world of this huge, useless, froward burocracy.

The UN is a lead balloon that isn't ever going to float and we should stop trying to drag it through the mall, even if it has 'Be My Valantine' happily painted on the side.

In all truth, leaving U.N. won't do anything.
Yes, the organization moves with all the speed of an ice glacier, but at least they're somewhat on board.
Amazingly, it's people like Chegitz, Floyd, and Sava, U.S. citizens without the ability to extract their heads, that are...irrritating.

The USA should not leave the UN.
                        It should:
                        1. VETO every proposal put forth to the SC now and forvever.
                        2. Refuse to PAY any dues to the UN and NGO's and use the money saved to negotiate bilateral treaties with various countries.

                          3. None of the above.

                          Three is the correct answer.

The UN is a morally bankrupt outfit.

                              - Libya chairing Human Rights...
                              - Ethiopia chairing Agriculture...
                              - Iraq (yes Iraq) coming up for disarmament chair...
                              - past and present support for terrorists (Mandela, Arafat. etc.)
                              - blatant anti-Semitism (the Durban conference)

Yes, the UN provides valuable medical/health services, but the cost of hitching one's cause to this wagon is too high.

Although i once was a huge supporter of the UN (the 'ideal' of the UN anyway), I no longer care a whit what the UN says on ANYTHING. They have lost their credibility. Someone earlier made the comment 'third time lucky'. Let's hope so.

Yeah, Libya as chair is quite laughable.
