US newspapers

I'm curious: of the major US newspapers which are the most conservative, which are considered more liberal?
Here in Australia our newspapers often print stories from various US newspapers, and I've always wanted to know if I'm reading something sourced from a rabid right wing rag or just from a moderately right wing rag.

The big liberal ones are the New York Times, Washington Post and Boston Globe (IIRC).

The Washington Times is somewhat conservative.

Newspapers outside the East Coast are irrelvant, IMHO

You guys forgot the Wall Street Journal, probably the most influential conservative paper in America.

Could someone answer the same question for me, but in regards to British papers? Some jackass at works gets a lot of his information out of British papers and I can't remember which ones to trust and which ones not too...

Ones to trust (the broadsheets):

The Times: slightly conserative
The Guardian: liberal
The Independent: What it says. A tad wishy-washy
The Observer: I forget, since I don't read it regularly

Ones to avoid (the tabloids)

The Sun: Populist
The Mirror: Ditto, but claims to be serious
The Daily Mail: AKA The Fascist Times. If this jackass at work quotes the Mail, laugh at him for a prolonged period of time. Then slap him across the face, hard. And laugh some more.

There are more papers (like the Financial Times), but at that point we start to get somewhat specialised.

The Times,Telegraph,Guardian and independant are good papers, you just have to remember the politics of them when reading an article. If you remove the right wing slant form a Telegraph article you would get more or less the same info as if you removed the left wing slant form the Guardian.

I was just thinking about this last night. Here is a rough rundown of major US papers, along with my take on where they stand. I have only vague impressions of some of them, so other people who are more familiar should feel free to chime in. Categories are in order from liberal to conservative, and papers are roughly in order within categories. My criteria for liberal in this case is that I have never known this newspaper to endorse a republican for president. Similarly, I have never known conservative papers to endorse a democrat for president. Moderate papers have endorsed some of each.

Liberal:
Boston Globe (most liberal)
New York Times
Philadelphia Inquirer?
Washington Post

Moderate:
Detroit Free Press
Dallas Morning News
Cleveland Plain Dealer
Miami Hearld

Conservative:
Chicago Tribune (this might be the last entry in the moderate category on other grounds)
Atlanta Constitution
Wall Street Journal
Washington Times
Orange County (California) Register (most conservative)

No, this guy quotes the Guardian most of the time, which sounds respectable. I'll just have to find some other reason to rationalize my dislike for him...

OCR is sometimes closer to libertarian than conservative. Their editorial writer, Alan Bock, is a lib who's opposed to war in Iraq for instance (IIRC). It seems to me that anybody much to the right of the War Street Journal would be endorsing out-and-out Fascism.

Also, I think the WaPo's liberalism is more a reputation than reality. The Bush administration probably disagrees.

Read by the people who run the country.

Daily Mirror:
Read by the people who think they run the country.

Guardian:
Read by the people who think they ought to run the country.

Morning Star:
Read by the people who think the country ought to be run by another country.

Daily Mail:
Read by the wives of the people who own the country.

Financial Times:
Read by the people who own the country.

Daily Express:
Read by the people who think that the country ought to be run as it used to be.

Daily Telegraph:
Read by the people who think it still is.

The Sun:
Their readers don't care who runs the country as long as she has big tits.
