    Fields Of Gold

You'll remember me when the west wind moves
    Upon the fields of barley
You'll forget the sun in his jealous sky
As we walk in the fields of gold

    So she took her love
    For to gaze awhile
    Upon the fields of barley
In his arms she fell as her hair came down
    Among the fields of gold

Will you stay with me, will you be my love
    Among the fields of barley
We'll forget the sun in his jealous sky
As we lie in the fields of gold

See the west wind move like a lover so
    Upon the fields of barley
Feel her body rise when you kiss her mouth
    Among the fields of gold
    I never made promises lightly
And there have been some that I've broken
But I swear in the days still left
We'll walk in the fields of gold
We'll walk in the fields of gold

Many years have passed since those summer days
    Among the fields of barley
See the children run as the sun goes down
    Among the fields of gold
You'll remember me when the west wind moves
    Upon the fields of barley
You can tell the sun in his jealous sky
When we walked in the fields of gold
When we walked in the fields of gold
When we walked in the fields of gold
"If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun." -Katherine Hepburn

Garbage - The world Is Not Enough

      I know how to hurt
      I know how to kill
      I know what to show
      And what to conceal
      I know when to talk
And I know when to touch
No one ever died from wanting too much

      Chorus:
      The world is not enough
But it is such a perfect place to start my love
      And if you're strong enough
Together we can take the world apart my love

      People like us
      Know how to survive
      There's no point in living
If you can't feel the life
      We know when to kiss
And we know when to kill
If we can't have it all
      Then nobody will

      Chorus

      I...I feel sick
      I...I feel scared
      I...I feel ready
      And so unprepared

      Chorus

      The world is not enough
      The world is not enough
"Love the earth and sun and animals, despise riches, give alms to every one that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning God, have patience and indulgence toward the people, take off your hat to nothing known or unknown . . . reexamine all you have been told at school or church or in any book, dismiss whatever insults your own soul, and your very flesh shall be a great poem and have the richest fluency" - Walt Whitman

      • Two For Tuesday; Johnny Mathis

        The Twelfth Of Never
(Written by Paul Francis Webster and Jerry Livingston)

You ask me how much I need you, must I explain?
I need you, oh my darling, like roses need rain
You ask how long I'll love you, I'll tell you true
Until the Twelfth of Never, I'll still be loving you

Hold me close, never let me go
Hold me close, melt my heart like April snow

I'll love you 'til the bluebells forget to bloom
I'll love you 'til the clover has lost its perfume
I'll love you 'til the poets run out of rhyme
Until the Twelfth of Never and that's a long, long time

Until the Twelfth of Never and that's a long, long time

        When Sunny Gets Blue
Words by Jack Segal and Music by Marvin Fisher

When Sunny gets blue, her eyes get gray and cloudy
Then the rain begins to fall
Pitter-patter, pitter-patter, love is gone so what can matter?
No sweet lovin' man comes to call

When Sunny gets blue, she breathes a sigh of sadness
Like the wind that stirs the trees
Wind that sets the leaves to swayin' like some violins are playin'
        Weird and haunting melodies

People used to love to-o-o hear her laugh, see her smile
That's how she got her name
Since that sad affair she's lost her smile, changed her style
        Somehow she's not the same

But mem'ries will fade and pretty dreams will rise up
Where her other dreams fell through
Hurry, new love, hurry here to kiss away each lonely tear
And hold her near when Sunny gets blue

Hurry, new love, hurry here to kiss away each lonely tear
And hold her near when Sunny gets blue
Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

        • SEE YOU IN SEPTEMBER
          THE HAPPENINGS

I'll be alone each and every night
While you're away, don't forget to write

          Bye-bye, so long, farewell
          Bye-bye, so long

          See you in September
See you when the summer's through
Here we are (bye, baby, goodbye)
Saying goodbye at the station (bye, baby, goodbye)
Summer vacation (bye, baby bye, baby)
Is taking you away (bye, baby, goodbye)

Have a good time but remember
There is danger in the summer moon above
Will I see you in September
Or lose you to a summer love
(counting the days 'til I'll be with you)
(counting the hours and the minutes, too)

          Bye, baby, goodbye
          Bye, baby, goodbye
Bye, baby, goodbye (bye-bye, so long, farewell)
Bye, baby, goodbye (bye-bye, so long)

Have a good time but remember
There is danger in the summer moon above
Will I see you in September
Or lose you to a summer love
(I'll be alone each and every night)
(While you're away, don't forget to write)

See you (bye-bye, so long, farewell)
In September (bye-bye, so long, farewell)
          I'm hopin' I'll
See you (bye-bye, so long, farewell)
In September (bye-bye, so long, farewell)
          Well, maybe I'll
See you (bye-bye, so long, farewell)
In September (bye-bye, so long, farewell)

          • Triple Shot Thursday; Bob Dylan

            Brownsville Girl

Well, there was this movie I seen one time,
About a man riding 'cross the desert and it starred Gregory Peck.
He was shot down by a hungry kid trying to make a name for himself.
The townspeople wanted to crush that kid down and string him up by the neck.

Well, the marshal, now he beat that kid to a bloody pulp
as the dying gunfighter lay in the sun and gasped for his last breath.
Turn him loose, let him go, let him say he outdrew me fair and square,
I want him to feel what it's like to every moment face his death.

Well, I keep seeing this stuff and it just comes a-rolling in
And you know it blows right through me like a ball and chain.
You know I can't believe we've lived so long and are still so far apart.
The memory of you keeps callin' after me like a rollin' train.

I can still see the day that you came to me on the painted desert
In your busted down Ford and your platform heels
I could never figure out why you chose that particular place to meet
Ah, but you were right. It was perfect as I got in behind the wheel.

Well, we drove that car all night into San Anton'
And we slept near the Alamo, your skin was so tender and soft.
Way down in Mexico you went out to find a doctor and you never came back.
I would have gone on after you but I didn't feel like letting my head get blown off.

Well, we're drivin' this car and the sun is comin' up over the Rockies,
Now I know she ain't you but she's here and she's got that dark rhythm in her soul.
But I'm too over the edge and I ain't in the mood anymore to remember the times when I was your only man
And she don't want to remind me. She knows this car would go out of control.

Brownsville girl with your Brownsville curls, teeth like pearls shining like the moon above
Brownsville girl, show me all around the world, Brownsville girl, you're my honey love.

Well, we crossed the panhandle and then we headed towards Amarillo
We pulled up where Henry Porter used to live. He owned a wreckin' lot outside of town about a mile.
Ruby was in the backyard hanging clothes, she had her red hair tied back. She saw us come rolling up in a trail of dust.
She said, "Henry ain't here but you can come on in, he'll be back in a little while."

Then she told us how times were tough and about how she was thinkin' of bummin' a ride back to where she started.
But ya know, she changed the subject every time money came up.
She said, "Welcome to the land of the living dead." You could tell she was so broken-hearted.
She said, "Even the swap meets around here are getting pretty corrupt."

"How far are y'all going?" Ruby asked us with a sigh.
"We're going all the way 'til the wheels fall off and burn,
'Til the sun peels the paint and the seat covers fade and the water moccasin dies."
Ruby just smiled and said, "Ah, you know some babies never learn."

Something about that movie though, well I just can't get it out of my head
But I can't remember why I was in it or what part I was supposed to play.
All I remember about it was Gregory Peck and the way people moved
And a lot of them seemed to be lookin' my way.

Brownsville girl with your Brownsville curls, teeth like pearls shining like the moon above
Brownsville girl, show me all around the world, Brownsville girl, you're my honey love.

Well, they were looking for somebody with a pompadour.
I was crossin' the street when shots rang out.
I didn't know whether to duck or to run, so I ran.
"We got him cornered in the churchyard," I heard somebody shout.

Well, you saw my picture in the Corpus Christi Tribune. Underneath it, it said, "A man with no alibi."
You went out on a limb to testify for me, you said I was with you.
Then when I saw you break down in front of the judge and cry real tears,
It was the best acting I saw anybody do.

Now I've always been the kind of person that doesn't like to trespass but sometimes you just find yourself over the line.
Oh if there's an original thought out there, I could use it right now.
You know, I feel pretty good, but that ain't sayin' much. I could feel a whole lot better,
If you were just here by my side to show me how.

Well, I'm standin' in line in the rain to see a movie starring Gregory Peck,
Yeah, but you know it's not the one that I had in mind.
He's got a new one out now, I don't even know what it's about
But I'll see him in anything so I'll stand in line.

Brownsville girl with your Brownsville curls, teeth like pearls shining like the moon above
Brownsville girl, show me all around the world, Brownsville girl, you're my honey love.

You know, it's funny how things never turn out the way you had 'em planned.
The only thing we knew for sure about Henry Porter is that his name wasn't Henry Porter.
And you know there was somethin' about you baby that I liked that was always too good for this world
Just like you always said there was something about me you liked that I left behind in the French Quarter.

Strange how people who suffer together have stronger connections than people who are most content.
I don't have any regrets, they can talk about me plenty when I'm gone.
You always said people don't do what they believe in, they just do what's most convenient, then they repent.
And I always said, "Hang on to me, baby, and let's hope that the roof stays on."

There was a movie I seen one time, I think I sat through it twice.
I don't remember who I was or where I was bound.
All I remember about it was it starred Gregory Peck, he wore a gun and he was shot in the back.
Seems like a long time ago, long before the stars were torn down.

Brownsville girl with your Brownsville curls, teeth like pearls shining like the moon above
Brownsville girl, show me all around the world, Brownsville girl, you're my honey love.

            Hurricane

Pistol shots ring out in the barroom night
Enter Patty Valentine from the upper hall.
She sees the bartender in a pool of blood,
Cries out, "My God, they killed them all!"
Here comes the story of the Hurricane,
The man the authorities came to blame
For somethin' that he never done.
Put in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been
            The champion of the world.

Three bodies lyin' there does Patty see
And another man named Bello, movin' around mysteriously.
"I didn't do it," he says, and he throws up his hands
"I was only robbin' the register, I hope you understand.
I saw them leavin'," he says, and he stops
"One of us had better call up the cops."
And so Patty calls the cops
And they arrive on the scene with their red lights flashin'
In the hot New Jersey night.

Meanwhile, far away in another part of town
Rubin Carter and a couple of friends are drivin' around.
Number one contender for the middleweight crown
Had no idea what kinda **** was about to go down
When a cop pulled him over to the side of the road
Just like the time before and the time before that.
In Paterson that's just the way things go.
If you're black you might as well not show up on the street
'Less you wanna draw the heat.

Alfred Bello had a partner and he had a rap for the cops.
Him and Arthur Dexter Bradley were just out prowlin' around
He said, "I saw two men runnin' out, they looked like middleweights
They jumped into a white car with out-of-state plates."
And Miss Patty Valentine just nodded her head.
Cop said, "Wait a minute, boys, this one's not dead"
So they took him to the infirmaryAnd though this man could hardly see
They told him that he could identify the guilty men.

Four in the mornin' and they haul Rubin in,
Take him to the hospital and they bring him upstairs.
The wounded man looks up through his one dyin' eye
Says, "Wha'd you bring him in here for? He ain't the guy!"
Yes, here's the story of the Hurricane,
The man the authorities came to blame
For somethin' that he never done.
Put in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been
            The champion of the world.

Four months later, the ghettos are in flame,
Rubin's in South America, fightin' for his name
While Arthur Dexter Bradley's still in the robbery game
And the cops are puttin' the screws to him, lookin' for somebody to blame.
"Remember that murder that happened in a bar?"
"Remember you said you saw the getaway car?"
"You think you'd like to play ball with the law?"
"Think it might-a been that fighter that you saw runnin' that night?"
"Don't forget that you are white."

Arthur Dexter Bradley said, "I'm really not sure."
Cops said, "A poor boy like you could use a break
We got you for the motel job and we're talkin' to your friend Bello
Now you don't wanta have to go back to jail, be a nice fellow.
You'll be doin' society a favor.
That sonofa***** is brave and gettin' braver.
We want to put his ass in stir
We want to pin this triple murder on him
            He ain't no Gentleman Jim.

"Rubin could take a man out with just one punch
But he never did like to talk about it all that much.
It's my work, he'd say, and I do it for pay
And when it's over I'd just as soon go on my way
            Up to some paradise
Where the trout streams flow and the air is nice
And ride a horse along a trail.
But then they took him to the jail house
Where they try to turn a man into a mouse.

All of Rubin's cards were marked in advance
The trial was a pig-circus, he never had a chance.
The judge made Rubin's witnesses drunkards from the slums
To the white folks who watched he was a revolutionary bum
And to the black folks he was just a crazy ******.
No one doubted that he pulled the trigger.
And though they could not produce the gun,
The D.A. said he was the one who did the deed
            And the all-white jury agreed.

Rubin Carter was falsely tried. The crime was murder "one," guess who testified?
Bello and Bradley and they both baldly lied
And the newspapers, they all went along for the ride.
How can the life of such a man
Be in the palm of some fool's hand?
            To see him obviously framed
Couldn't help but make me feel ashamed to live in a land
            Where justice is a game.

Now all the criminals in their coats and their ties
Are free to drink martinis and watch the sun rise
While Rubin sits like Buddha in a ten-foot cell
An innocent man in a living hell.
That's the story of the Hurricane,
But it won't be over till they clear his name
And give him back the time he's done.
Put in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been
            The champion of the world.

            ---------------------------------------------------------------

            Masters of War

            Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build the big bombs
            You that hide behind walls
            You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks

            You that never done nothin'
            But build to destroy
            You play with my world
            Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
            When the fast bullets fly

            Like Judas of old
            You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
            You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
            That runs down my drain

            You fasten the triggers
            For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
            You hide in your mansion
            As young people's blood
            Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud

            You've thrown the worst fear
            That can ever be hurled
            Fear to bring children
            Into the world
            For threatening my baby
            Unborn and unnamed
            You ain't worth the blood
            That runs in your veins

            How much do I know
            To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
            You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
            Though I'm younger than you
            Even Jesus would never
            Forgive what you do

Let me ask you one question
            Is your money that good
            Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
            I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
            All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul

And I hope that you die
            And your death'll come soon
            I will follow your casket
            In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
            Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand o'er your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead

Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

He also hates Texans and Australians, he does diversify." ~ Braindead

            • Triple Shot Thursday - Travis

              Driftwood

              Everything is open
              Nothing is set in stone
              Rivers turn to oceans
              Oceans tide you home
Home is where the heart is
But your heart had to roam
              Drifting over bridges
              Never to return
              Watching bridges burn

              You're driftwood floating underwater
              Breaking into pieces, pieces, pieces
Just driftwood, hollow and of no use
Waterfalls will find you, bind you, grind you

              Nobody is an island
              Everyone had to go
              Pillars turn to butter
              Butterflying low
Low is where your heart is
But your heart has to grow
              Drifting under bridges
              Never with the flow

And you really didn't think it would happen
But it really is the end of the line
So I'm sorry that you've turned to driftwood
But you've been drifting for a long, long time

              Everywhere there's trouble
              Nowhere's safe to go
              Pushes turn to shovels
              Shovelling the snow
              Frozen you have chosen
The path you wish to go
              Drifting now forever
              And forever more
              Until you reach your shore

              You're driftwood floating underwater
              Breaking into pieces, pieces, pieces
Just driftwood, hollow and of no use
Waterfalls will find you, bind you, grind you

And you really didn't think it would happen
But it really is the end of the line
So I'm sorry that you've turned to driftwood
But you've been drifting for a long, long time
You've been drifting, for a long, long
Drifting for a long, long time

Why Does It Always Rain On Me?

              I can't sleep tonight
              everybody's saying everything is alright
still I can't close my eyes
I'm seeing a tunnel at the end of all of these lights
sunny days, where have you gone?
I get the strangest feeling you belong

              chorus
why does it always rain on me?
is it because I lied when I was seventeen?
why does it always rain on me?
even when the sun is shining
              I can't avoid the lightning

              I can't stand myself
I'm being held up by invisible men
still life on a shelf when
I've got my mind on something else
sunny days, oh where have you gone
I get the strangest feeling you belong

why does it always rain on me?
is it because I lied when I was seventeen?
why does it always rain on me?
even when the sun is shining
              I can't avoid the lightning

oh where did the blue sky go?
oh why is it raining so cold?
              s so cold

why does it always rain on me?
is it because I lied when I was seventeen?
why does it always rain on me?
even when the sun is shining
              I can't avoid the lightning
why does it always rain on me?
why does it always rain on

The Last Laugh (Of The Laughter)

              When the laughter fade away
              Ma vie
              Tout ma vie
When there's nothing left to say
              Ma vie
              My oh my
It's the last laugh of the laughter
Sur la dernier page du chapitre
On the last day of the year
              Ma vie
              Tout ma vie
              When the spotlight fade away
              Ma vie
              C'est la vie
When the blue skies turns to grey
              Ma vie
              Tout ma vie
It's the last laugh of the laughter
Sur la dernier page du chapitre
On the last day of the year
              Ma vie
              Tout ma vie
              When the laughter fades away
              Ma vie
              Tout ma vie
When there's nothing more to say
              Ma vie
              My oh my

                Something To Talk About
                Bonnie Raitt

People are talking, talking 'bout people
I hear them whisper, you won't believe it
They think we're lovers kept under covers
I just ignore it, but they keep saying
We laugh just a little too loud
We stand just a little too close
We stare just a little too long
Maybe they're seeing something we don't, Darlin'.

I feel so foolish, I never noticed
                You'd act so nervous,
Could you be falling for me?
It took a rumor to make me wonder
Now I'm convinced I'm going under
                Thinking 'bout you every day
                Dreaming 'bout you every night
Hoping that you feel the same way
Now that we know it, let's really show it, Darlin'.

Let's give them something to talk about
Let's give them something to talk about
Let's give them something to talk about
How about love, love, love, love?

Let's give them something to talk about
A little mystery to figure out
Let's give them something to talk about
How about love, love, love, love?

Triple shot of great singers, great songs; three great women

Jackie DeShannon - What The World Needs Now

                  What the world needs now,
                  Is love, sweet love,
It's the only thing that there's just too little of.
                  What the world needs now,
                  Is love, sweet love,
No, not just for some but for everyone.

Lord, we don't need another mountain,
There are mountains and hillsides enough to climb,
There are oceans and rivers enough to cross,
Enough to last 'til the end of time.

                  What the world needs now,
                  Is love, sweet love,
It's the only thing that there's just too little of.
                  What the world needs now,
                  Is love, sweet love,
No, not just for some but for everyone.

Lord, we don't need another meadow,
There are cornfields and wheatfields enough to grow,
There are sunbeams and moonbeams enough to shine,
Oh listen Lord, if you want to know...oh...

                  What the world needs now,
                  Is love, sweet love,
It's the only thing that there's just too little of.
                  What the world needs now,
                  Is love, sweet love,
No, not just for some oh but just for every, every, everyone

                  Janis Joplin - Mercedes Benz

Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends.
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends,
So Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?

Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a color TV ?
Dialing For Dollars is trying to find me.
I wait for delivery each day until three,
So oh Lord, won’t you buy me a color TV ?

Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a night on the town ?
I’m counting on you, Lord, please don’t let me down.
Prove that you love me and buy the next round,
Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a night on the town ?

                  Everybody!
Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends,
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends,
So oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
                  (That's it!)

Joni Mitchell - Big Yellow Taxi

                  They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
With a pink hotel, a boutique
                  And a swinging hot spot

Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
                  Till it's gone
                  They paved paradise
                  Put up a parking lot

                  They took all the trees
Put 'em in a tree museum
                  And they charged the people
A dollar and a half just to see 'em

Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
                  Till it's gone?
                  They paved paradise
                  Put up a parking lot

                  Hey farmer farmer
                  Put away that DDT now
Give me spots on my apples
But leave me the birds and the bees
                  Please!

Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
                  Till it's gone?
                  They paved paradise
                  Put up a parking lot

                  Late last night
I heard the screen door slam
                  And a big yellow taxi
                  Took away my old man

Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
                  Till it's gone?
                  They paved paradise
                  Put up a parking lot
                  They paved paradise
                  Put up a parking lot
                  They paved paradiiise....

And put up a parking lot!
                  (giggle)

                    • Twistin' The Night Away
                      Sam Cooke

Let me tell you 'bout a place
                      Somewhere up-a New York way
Where the people are so gay
                      Twistin' the night away-ay
Here they have a lot of fun
                      Puttin' trouble on the run
Man, you find the old and young
                      Twistin' the night away
They're twistin', twistin', everybody's feelin' great
They're twistin', twistin', they're twistin' the night away
Here's a man in evenin' clothes
How he got here, I don't know, but
Man, you oughta see him go
                      Twistin' the night away-ay
He's dancin' with the chick in slacks
                      She's a-movin' up and back
Oh man, there ain't nothin' like
                      Twistin' the night away
They're twistin', twistin', everybody's feelin' great
They're twistin', twistin', they're twistin' the night away
                      Let's twist a while!
                      Lean up, lean back
                      Lean up, lean back
                      Watusi, now fly, now twist
                      They're twistin' the night away
                      Here's a fella in bluejeans
                      Dancin' with a older Queen
Who's dolled up in-a diamond rings and
                      Twistin' the night away-ay
Man, you oughta see her go
Twistin' to the rock and roll
Here you find the young and old
                      Twistin' the night away
They're twistin', twistin', man, everybody's feelin' great
They're twistin', twistin', they're twistin' the night away
                      One more time!
                      Lean up, lean back
                      Lean up, lean back
                      Watusi, now fly, now twist
                      They're twistin' the night away
Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

\get together and let the good times roll

Don't stand there moaning, talking trash
If you wanna have some fun,
You'd better go out and spend some cash
And let the good time roll

                          I met a fan dancer
                          Down in South Side Birmingham
She was running from a fat man
                          Selling salvation in his hand
Now he's trying to save me
We'll I'm doing alright the best that I can
                          Just another fallen angel
Trying to get through the night

Step by step, one by one, higher and higher
Step by step, rung by rung climbing Jacob's ladder

                          Coming over the airwaves
                          The man says I'm overdue
                          Sing along, send some money
                          Join the chosen few
Well mister I'm not in a hurry
And I don't want to be like you
And all I want from tomorrow
Is to get it better than today

                            SEND IN THE CLOWNS

                            Isn't it rich?
                            Are we a pair?
Me here at last on the ground,
                            You in mid-air..
                            Where are the clowns?

                            Isn't it bliss?
                            Don't you approve?
                            One who keeps tearing around,
                            One who can't move...
                            Where are the clowns?
                            Send in the clowns.

Just when I'd stopped opening doors,
Finally knowing the one that I wanted was yours.
Making my entrance again with my usual flair
                            Sure of my lines...
                            No one is there.

                            Don't you love farce?
                            My fault, I fear.
I thought that you'd want what I want...
                            Sorry, my dear!
                            And where are the clowns
                            Send in the clowns
                            Don't bother, they're here.

                            Isn't it rich?
                            Isn't it queer?
Losing my timing this late in my career.
                            And where are the clowns?
                            There ought to be clowns...
                            Well, maybe next year.

                            Both Sides Now

Bows and flows of angel hair and ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere, I've looked at clouds that way
But now they only block the sun they rain and snow on everyone
So many things I would have done, but clouds got in my way

I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down and still somehow
                            It's cloud's illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds at all

Moons and Junes and ferris wheels the dizzy dancing way you feel
As every fairy tale comes real, I've looked at love that way
But now it's just another show, you leave 'em laughin when you go
And if you care don't let them know, don't give yourself away

I've looked at love from both sides now
From give and take and still somehow
                            It's love's illusions I recall
I really don't know love at all

Tears and fears and feeling proud, to say, "I love you" right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds, I've looked at life that way
But now old friends are acting strange they shake their heads, they say
                            I've changed
But something's lost but something's gained in living every day

I've looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose and still somehow
                            It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all

Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

                              • And now for a proper Joni song...

                                That Song About The Midway

I met you on a midway at a fair last year
And you stood out like a ruby in a black man's ear
You were playing on the horses
You were playing on the guitar strings
You were playing like a devil wearing wings
Wearing wings, you looked so grand wearing wings
Do you tape them to your shoulders just to sing?
                                Can you fly?
                                I heard you can
                                Can you fly?
Like an eagle doin' your hunting from the sky

I followed with the sideshows to another town
And I found you in a trailer on the camping grounds
You were betting on some lover
You were shaking up the dice
And I thought I saw you cheating once or twice
                                Once or twice
I heard your bid once or twice
Were you wondering was the gamble worth the price?
                                Pack it in
                                I heard you did
                                Pack it in
Was it hard to fold a hand
                                You knew could win?

So lately you've been hiding, it was somewhere in the news
And I'm still at these races with my ticket stubs and my blues
And a voice calls out the numbers, and it sometimes mentions mine
And I feel like I've been working overtime
                                Overtime
I've lost my fire over time
Always playin' one more hand for one more dime

                                Slowin' down
                                I'm gettin' tired
                                Slowin' down
And I envy you the value that you've found
'Cause I'm midway down the midway
                                Slowin' down
                                Down
                                Down
                                Down...
