  • Should I go to the hospital?

I went to bed feeling a little icky, and woke up at 2:30, raced to the bathroom and vomited (see vomit thread). Not to be too graphic, but the slueces opened up at both ends, if you know what I mean.

So I thought the worst was over, it was probably something not sitting well, and tried to go back to sleep. I couldn't get to sleep, and about 1/2 hour later I was back in the bathroom again. I vomited until nothing more could come out and I was dry heaving.

About every 1/2 hour from then until now, I've been having to jaunt to the bathroom. I was feeling very dehydrated and a little weak and dizzy when I walked. I called into work and let them know the situation, went to the corner drug store and picked up some liquids, theraflu, antacid, and a thermometer.

I don't have a fever at all, temp is 98.3. My stomach aches, but I think that may be from the excess vomitation. Still feel weak, and the body aches.

So...hospital is across the street, and I am insured...should I go?

in england you would be expected to see your GP who would refer you to the hospital if it was needed.

Hospitals shopuld be for emergencies or referrals.
Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.

If you are worried, why not? If you want to tough it out, I would get in touch with a friend or roomate and ask them to check in on me in a few hours, and then try to get some sleep.

IMO the hospital isn't going to do much until you are in bad shape. They might give you an IV to help you with dehydration, but to figure out what's going on is probably going to take quite a bit of time. If you feel like this in 24 hours I would definitely go though.

Be a man, tough it out.
Any views I may express here are personal and certainly do not in any way reflect the views of my employer. Tis the rising of the moon..

Look, I just don't anymore, okay?

Going to the hospital couldn't hurt. It sounds like you have some kind of viral infection - normally, the only thing you can do is ride it out (along with plenty of rest and fluids)

          Hope you feel better soon!

Sounds like a normal stomach illness. If you don't feel better after next night I would see a doctor. But I wouldn't worry. Most of these sicknesses are painful, but short.

It could be food poisoning or a viral stomach infection- go see a doctor asap
I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.

That was pretty much my thinking. I don't want to go to the emergency room and waste their time for what could very well be simple food poisoning or a stomach bug. But I also don't want to wait on something that may be serious...what if I have an ulcer?

Like it was stated earlier, if you're not feeling any better in 24 hours (or your condition worsens), I would then say "go to the emergency room." Of course, you won't be over your illness in 24 hours, but you should be able to tell if you're feeling any better by then (even if it's a slight improvement).

Was there blood in your vomit or stool? (It might look black) Do you have reason to think that you may have an ulcer? What you have described so far doesn't sound like an ulcer, it sounds like food poisoning. Probably the worst has passed, but if you are worried then make an appointment to see your doctor, or worst case go to the ER.

If his appendix was acting up, he would know it. Along with the vomitting/dry heaves he would be experiencing pain in his abdomen.....been there, done that.

Boris, if you do start experiencing pain in your abdomen - get to the hospital ASAP! You can die from a burst appendix. My doctors told me that if I had not gone in the hospital when I did (they had to rush me to emergency surgery), my appendix would have burst in another 3-4 hours.

At first, I too thought I had food poisoning - but it wasn't the case....
