  • Opera 7. Worth it?

Free Opera browsers for computer, mobile, gaming, and data saving. Browse securely and privately on every device.

The final version is available it seems, but is it worth upgrading from the most recent version of Opera 6?

Are any of the new features really useful, or are they just fluff?

Also, I've never used the Opera mail client. Should I?

I haven't taken a look at the new Opera yet, I think I'll do that tonight.

I like the mail client though.

      Do you need a fluff?

Opera 7 rules, and the mail client now gives you a web-based username@opera.com email account, rather than just importing Outlook settings. It's got a great feel to it as well. The only downside, and it's just a personal preference, is that the tabs are placed at the top rather than the bottom of the page.

I just installed it, and I like it. The only thing that's a bit of a shame is that I cannot use my old skin/button combination.

Just installed it. I like it alot, but the tabs being at the top will take some getting used. I think it's a more sensible place for them, but it'll be a few days before I stop moving the mouse to the bottom of the browser to change window.

              Spoiler:
The spoiler boxes work in Opera7. Which is nice.

Yeah.. beta had many problems, but most of them seems to be fixed with this final version. I like it a lot. I'd never go back to any other browser .

The new Opera is amazing. It's easily better than IE now - it just has a more complete feel to it.

Opera 6 was just average, it didn't handle tables and style sheets too well and liked to crash randomly.

I suppose it's just a preference thing really, but unbiasdely(is that a word), from someone that isn't a Linux/Microsoft zealot it's definitely the best web broswer around.

I've heard that Netscape/Mozilla browser, that is to be released, is looking quite promising.

I have the tabs at the bottom.

Opera is great! I have had some problems with it earlier, but now I have used the browser for several days, and the only problem I've had, came an hour ago when I suddenly got lots of crahes, so I had to go back to IE...

Anyway, the browser is much better than it's competitors on several areas, and I recommend you to use it. The only donwpeak is that the mail client doesn't work. It can't get contact with the mail server... But I feel that Outlook(2002 that is, not ugly Express) is the best anyway, so that's not a huge problem for me.

It works perfectly fine on my system, and has done so for quite some time. Are you sure you filled in all the data correctly?

                          Opera is great.

I'm only too used to IE to switch, by now.

And Opera doesn't do hebrew well. At all actually (correct for beta version 2, which doesn't render hebrew at all [beta 1 just rendered it wrongly])

It worked perfectly on my system too, untill earlier today, as I mentioned. I rebooted the machine after installing DirectX 9.0, then I got the problem. I then used system restore in WinXP, but the problem was still there. I therefore don't think that was the problem, but nevertheless didn't install it again. I uninstalled the program, installed it again, had no problems, but then they came again. Then I gave up...

The only downside, and it's just a personal preference, is that the tabs are placed at the top rather than the bottom of the page.

Have you ever tried right-clicking or - I'm going out on a limb here - opening the View menu? Unlike Phoenix, Opera lets you place interface elements wherever you want them to be.

Are any of the new features really useful, or are they just fluff?

Opera now has better DOM than MSIE. To give one example, try this site's Pure CSS Menus. The classic ComplexSpiral also works perfectly now.

The Wand (CTRL+ENTER to enter saved passwords) rocks. Toolbar customisability is almost perfect.

The only downside is that they got rid of the Active Bookmark Folder. I used to use that feature a lot.

BTW, you should add the following to menu.ini to fully enjoy the optional Windows sidebar:
                              Code:
                              [Windows Item popup Menu]
                              Item, "Close" = Delete
Here's a screenshot of my highly-customised version with the Minimalist skin and the Sea colour scheme:
