  • Do you ever save threads?

    Well?

I do. Got a fair number of them on my hard-drive from here to the SDMB. Right now I'm in the process of saving all 6 pages to last weekends "MS Dividend" thread, started by Asher.

    Other threads I have saved:

    How should Social Security Work?
Single Issue Voter (me vs. Floyd, turning into Loinburger vs. Floyd in a fight to exhaustion)
    Social Security Alternative
    Star Wars is not sci-fi
Ten Days that Shook my World
    Big SF intellectual screw-ups

and others on the computer at work.

no... I didn't even know you could save threads...

maybe I should go back and find the threads where I get restricted... its funny to look back and see how stupid I am. I wish I could stop being stupid.
To us, it is the BEAST.

      Do you save my threads?
"Spirit merges with matter to sanctify the universe. Matter transcends to return to spirit. The interchangeability of matter and spirit means the starlit magic of the outermost life of our universe becomes the soul-light magic of the innermost life of our self." - Dennis Kucinich, candidate for the U. Well, I hate typing in the same damn thing every 4 months in some Social Security thread, so I saved those so that I can just cut n paste w/o having to freakin' seach the OT. I have a lot of the real funny ones from the SDMB, including the TMI threads, the "dumb things you've said during sex" thread, and the LOTR thread (51 pages and counting!)

So do you just cut and paste stuff, or is there an actual link to save an entire thread as a file?

I can't read your threads... the fonts don't translate to English.

              File -> Save As

Just like everything else in Windows

well yeah, I know you can save web-pages, but I was wondering if there was like a text-only version, or printer-friendly version... you know, some format that is specifically designed for forum-archiving.

Create a folder to put them (mine is creatively entitled "Saved Threads")

                    In IE, click on File
                    Click on "Save As..."
Save in proper directory. You will get the HTML file and a folder for that page containing all .gifs, jpegs, etc.

Repeat for each page. IE will give each page the same name (ala "Apolyton CS Forums Miscellaneous Off-Topic Star Wars is not Sci Fi!.html"), so you will have to add a

                    "- Page 1"

                    "- Page 2"

etc so that it becomes "Apolyton CS Forums Miscellaneous Off-Topic Star Wars is not Sci Fi! - Page 1.html".

The folder will be named "Apolyton CS Forums Miscellaneous Off-Topic Star Wars is not Sci Fi! - Page 1_files".

Yes, it saves the same damned gif files in each of the individual folders. But I've got 38gigs free so I'm not freaking out just yet.

                    Btw, WB!

I never save threads. Occasionally I'll save a link to a thread, but I'll generally clean them out after a month or two when I realize that I'm never going to look at the thread again.
                          <p style="font-size:1024px">HTML is disabled in signatures </p>

I also have all my "arcade challenge" threads archived, and I'll start archiving the SF book discussion clubs (GO VOTE AND PARTICIPATE) next month or so.

The only thread I've ever saved is the "guess the real ming" thread.

And it only took one folder because i put 500 posts per page.
