I'm in the military (Reserves now, after recently leaving active duty), and could end up in the desert.
I have many friends already there.
It's our job, and if called we have to go and do it to the best of our ability.
Which means that we will do it effectively.Some days are diamonds, some days are rocks...Comment

Yeah, same here. This war does not have support in the UK, despite the number of troops being sent. I am glad to see there are protests over there in Oz, I can imagine them starting up here a bit more strongly if anything starts to occur. Simple fact is, there just hasn't been any justification for a potential war, just gesturing.Originally posted by Skanky Burns

I'm reading a book about the British Empire and was surprised to find that the British forces in the 16th, 17th and 18th century actually had rules for dividing up the loot from captured cities and ships. It was called "prize money". All the troops in a successful battle got a cut with the lion's share going to the officers and some kicked back to the Government. The navy was particularly lucrative, as was service in colonial armies. In some cases fabulous wealth was distributed. After capturing a Spanish gold ship, officers could retire on the proceeds to a country estate.
