So if something is 'going to happen' and 'no one cares' then the law should not be followed?
“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

underage drinking on mardi gras DOES result in some other crimes besides the act of drinking... thousands of rowdy drunk teenagers running around... best to enforce the drinking law before they start rioting and raping

As long as it's not a non-consensual violent crime, then certainly.

        AS,

underage drinking on mardi gras DOES result in some other crimes besides the act of drinking... thousands of rowdy drunk teenagers running around... best to enforce the drinking law before they start rioting and raping
So now drinking automatically leads to raping?

Yeah, and if a rape happens, I'm certain they arrest you in New Orleans, even on Mardi Gras. But they don't really go around checking ID, either. You see, they're too busy trying to stop REAL crimes from happening.

                Huh?

When did I ever pretend to be perfect?

If I got busted for whatever's on my computer, I'll understand why.

I don't recall ever saying I'd never dare break the law, just that I can understand the concept of ENFORCING laws because...well, they are laws.

Do you have some fundamental problems with reading comprehension or are you just counting on everyone else being stupid when you argue with them (I see Floyd thought it was a good point )?

they broke the law... the mayor did what he is supposed to do...

if you got a problem with the law, petition to change it... don't just disobey it.
                  I agree Speer.
I don't see how anyone could argue against this.

Thats besides the point... there's a difference between a crime occuring privately and one occuring in public in full view of the police... in the latter, the police, being right there, witnessing a crime, HAVE to arrest the offenders... at least they supposed to.

oh horror, I just agreed with DF !
Well, since I half agree with Libertarians (on the non-econic side), I guess I should get used to it.

(note to DF : please do not start the debate on the lack of consistence of pro-welfare liberals, it would be an ugly threadjack )

That's not beside the point at all. You, by having illegal music on the computer, are engaging in criminal activity that both parties have not consented to, while the Rolling Stones engaged in "criminal" activity that no one present objected to. Which do you imagine is worse?

                        Mattyboy,

I understand it's the law. I'm just saying it's bad judgement to enforce the law down to the letter, in many cases. It would have made much more sense to ignore the whole thing, realize no one was being hurt, and get on with the business of catching real criminals.

As much as I hate to agree with Albert Speer on any issue, I have to agree with Mayor Bloomberg's actions. This double standard we sometimes have for celebrities is sick. Winona Ryder gets caught shoplifting, people start demanding "Free Winona". That singer for the Who, the one who downloaded kiddy porn- there were people here defending him against those who want harsh punishment. And now it's ok if these people want to break the law? Sorry, but if we are gonna have a law its got to apply to everyone, the fact that it is a celebrity and they are performing a concert doesn't make it ok for them.

This is a poor example because, apparently, he actually reported what the content was to police over a year ago, long before he was even being investigated or busted for it.

So, Shi, do you think that the government should go arrest someone sufferring from a painful form of cancer, who is smoking pot to relieve the pain?

Come on - that would be silly, not to mention cruel.

My position has nothing to do with the celebrity status of the Rolling Stones. It would be the same no matter who was up on stage.
