I've always thought that this was a deliberate literary device to match Harry's age (and presumably the age of children who are reading the books when they first come out) with reasonably appropriate levels of violence and sexuality.

One can only imagine what will be in book seven when Harry will be 17.

I think you're right Spencer, that's what I had always assumed too.
We'll have to wait and see if the trend continues in the next book.

That's not what the Wall Street Journal reported about the owners of the book rights. US publisher jumped 9%. British publisher jumped 4%. Perhaps AOL-TW didn't move because the stock is so much bigger and beacause the profits are heavier on the book side than for liscenced other applications. (I.e. the new book doesn't make movie tie-ins and games and such change much. Also, the deal negotiated may not be very sweet for AOL-TW.)

The book profits from Harry Potter are a drop in the bucket of AOL time-Warner. Maybe you havent been keeping track of the stock. With the AOL-side losses and huge charges the companies been hit with (not to mention investigations into their accounting) you'd be better off investing in Enron. There was even talk of dropping the 'AOL' from the company name to try to regain investor confidence.

EDIT I'm not sure that AOL Time Warner actually owns the book rights (since I dont know if they own Scholastic Trade, the American Publisher of the Harry Potter books) but they do own everything else (movies merchandising) so far as I can tell.

AOL does not own the book profits.

Can I just say that last night I was reading Goblet of Fire again, (this is the third time, and I'm loving it even more than the first two times) and this time when I read the revelation that Neville's parents were tortured to insanity very nearly brought me to tears, and also filled me with a very real, visceral rage.
THAT is quality reading. The fourth book is now officially my favorite.

Only God knows what happens to you when you read of Frodo's struggle with the power of the ring

Quality reading perhaps... but was it quality writing? Inquiring minds want to know .

I would have been mad more at Rowling than Voldemort if it hadn't been quality writing...
And no, I don't tear up with Frodo's struggle with the ring. I just get highly engrossed.
I had forgotten about Neville's parents, and this time, the relevation just really hit me for some reason.
It really casts new light on the whole character of Neville. Imagine, having to go to see your parents insane, and having them not recognize you? I wouldn't wish that on anyone...

Quality writing yes, but perhaps a bit much. I mean, I thought GoF, while being great, was a little...well... big. This one is 30% MORE?! Editor, quick! By this rate she'll have a 2000 page book for the 7th year .

You could say that, but you'd be wrong.
Also, Imran - I love them being longer. Nearly everything she writes I simply find interesting, with perhaps the exception being "Chamber Of Secrets"
Plus, you have to take into account that the fonts are larger in this than in "adult" books.

Ok, this has been a little woodpecker working at my brain for a long time, but I can't stand it anymore. monolith, did you have a username before this one?

BTW I agree that the Chamber of Secrets was the worst book at least in terms of plotline. She messed around with metaphors too much at the end. I'm really looking forward to 800 pages of Harry Potter reading in the summer.
