This is really sixties, but if you listen to Marvin Gaye's earlier recordings, there's some really good stuff - "Can I Get A Witness", "Hitch-hike", "How Sweet It Is".
Indeed. Marvin Gaye's 60s recordings are awesome, better than his 70's stuff IMO. But then I love 60s soul over every other genre ever, so I'm probably biased.
Many is the morn that I mourn for soul and funk. The 70s are a sadly underappreciated decade for music... one bad apple (disco) ruined it for the whole bunch.

I'm biased as well - best music ever.
Being an old guy, I was fortunate enough to see most major Motown and Stax acts on stage in the sixties and early seventies - wow!!
You lucky bastard. The Stax Tour of Europe is probably #1 on my list of "concerts I would go to if I had a time machine". Heck, it's probably the only concert I've seen on video that practically leaps through the screen.
It looks like the last bit of Earl Van is a filtered word - anyway, he did an instrumental called "All For You" and has the same last name as a famous painter.
Or a structure in the Netherlands used to hold back water.
