  • How is the future need for decommisioning/refurbishment dealt with?

Saras: Same in the US, I believe. A sinking fund is set up (by law) for decommissioning/refurbishment, payable over the expected life of the plant. I guess that somewhat offsets the benefits of a low interest rate environment. Don't know if payments are adjusted in an underfunded or overfunded situation.

    but moreso in ongoing maintenance

Super Sten: I believe that maintenance would go under operating costs. Attached is a graphic for the relative costs per kwh of nuclear power versus others, given a 5% interest rate, 30 year plant life, 70% load.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

    • Interesting revision upward of Q1 '02 GDP by 0.3 percentage points to 1.9%. Both a good and bad situation to be in, since we're still losing a small number of jobs.

Hope Sten can start doing the big cha-ching soon!

      • I know we need some more plants in California, but from what I hear they aren't being built as fast as they should be, even with the low interest rates.
        Recall Davis!!!

Why don't we have more of those plants that harness energy from waves?

Also, I remember sometime ago I read that someone was coming up with a device that could absorb heat and harness the energy through harmonic vibrations... What's up with that?

I say that everyone needs to keep their hands off Cali right now, as far as our energy crisis is going (like GW said sometime ago). Yeah, there has been a lot of underhanded moves by outside energy suppliers, but there has also been alot of BS happening within our own state that we need to take care of.

Some say that the economy has to grow by 4% to create jobs. Damn, that's a lot.

                        • Another question that I have regarding the relative attractiveness of some assets in a low interest rate environment...

Wouldn't it make sense that adding skyscraper space would be more attractive in a low interest rate environment? The price of land goes up as the interest rates go down, but the price of steel doesn't.

                          • Assuming skycrapers are built out of a pure economic rationale. Remember we discussed the economic sensibility of skycrapers a while ago and we couldn't draw any conclusions.
In that sense they're like Nuclear power plants IMHO, not just built with a simple cost/benefits calculation in mind, but also out of prestige.

True. True. But Sten also made the comment that skyscrapers aren't that economical anymore. So I'm looking to see what would make them more economical.

My condo is worth more than the current skyscraper build price that we figured out of $225/ft^2 (real estate inclusive), indicating that it would be more economical to build up, if the zoning regulations permitted it.

                              • Here's an article on the relative merits of the Fed v. ECB policies that mentions the Taylor rule. Colon should like that!

Interestingly, Taylor will be cutting his teeth on Iraq's economy. Most of the macroeconomist type work is being done under his office, IIRC.
