I was thinking that, but then weren't they far and away the largest user of slaves?

I think Universal Suffrage would be a better choice, but that is again no one nation or event.
You're soooooo Eurocentric. What about Brazil? Slavery continued until the 1880s. Today half the population is black, so you can imagine how many slaves Brazilians owned at the time of emancipation.

Either gunpowder or the internal combustion engine.

I nominate 1945- the detonation of the atomic bomb, an event which has shaped world diplomacy ever since, and will continue to shape world diplomacy for the forseeable future.

If you look, the quote is in reference to western powers. Is Brazil a western power?

Congress of Vienna is way more important that Waterloo, which is essentially a non-event. Vienna set up a political system in europe that lasted a century.

Here is a list of my semi-final choices. There are 25 here, so if you suggest one, then suggest one that isn't that important to take off.

I didn't include Japan/China. One reason is because this is a eurocentric (nice word ) course, and another reason is because I would have to write them up and I don't think I would do that well.

The write up is mainly how this event changed the course of history (and was thus important)

1607 1st British N. American colony established at Jamestown
1609 Galileo proves Copernicus' heliocentric theory
1641 Charles I of England beheaded
                    1648 Treaty of Westphalia
1661 Louis XIV begins to centralize his power
1701 Jethro Tull invents seeding drill
1776 The USA declared independance from Britain (or maybe Jefferson drafts Dec of Ind)
1782 James Watt improves steam engine
                    1793 Louis XVI beheaded
                    1799 Napoleon seizes power
1814 Congress of Vienna decides Europe's future
                    1833 Factory Act (Britain)
                    1833 Abolition bill (Britain)
1848 Marx writes the Communist Manifesto
1859 Darwin: The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection
1860 Etienne Lenoir developes commercially viable internal combustion engine
1878 Pasteur - "Germ Theory and it's Application to Medicine and Surgery."
                    1903 Wright Brother's 1st flight
                    1917 October Revolution in Russia
                    1919 Treaty of Versailles
                    1933 Hitler comes to power
1945 First atomic bomb used on Hiroshima
                    1945 Development of ENIAC
                    1957 Launch of Sputnick
1991 Collapse of communism, USSR - end of cold war

I would replace "1961 Yuri Gargarin - 1st man in space" with "launch of Sputnik". It came as such a surprise and it led to the whole man-in-space contest.

I would add "discovery of first extra-solar planet", but I'm not sure what to replace. Perhaps "1641 Charles I of England beheaded".

The course title is "World History: The West and the World"; the old title is "Modern Western Civilization".

None of the content was changed when the name was changed... . Also, I'm not as interested with China...
