Stobie wasn't really part of the community. He was off in his own world most of the time. Great guy, knew more about SMAC than most people, even got credit in the strategy...he just didn't have any close friends in the community though.
I have just always assumed he had a real life and didn't need us.

I'm going to have a somewhat similar reaction as Snapcase. Trappist in his infernal sadism has pulled out threads to make us look stupid, or perhaps remind us that we were stupid back then. I definitely was worse at spelling ("brobe" the government? Ah, for an edit function!).
That said, there were some pretty good threads nevertheless. I remember some very early gun-control debates with Wraith, as well as Octopus's posts (one of the better posters there, definitely), as well as some of the stories that had potential.
I fear what will happen when/if I have children. I know what an idiot I was online when I was old enough to be in high school. Considering that by the time I'm old enough kids will be routinely logging on when they're 7...

That would be because he was a beta tester. But yeah, TAS was an interesting guy. I remember doing "The Club of the Future" as a kind of random cross between the story threads and the Club threads that he started. He also believed in Christian mysticism and believed that he could detect pregnant women by noticing the "purer souls" being that a baby untainted by sin was within her (he used this as a part of an argument for pro-lifeness. I mean, after all, if babies really do get souls at conception and he's checked this out, I guess we should be pro-life!). I'll say this- at least he was brave enough to say that, since I know he was smart enough to realize what others would think of him for such a claim.
Edit: And since people seem to be posting it, my profile.
All syllogisms have three parts.
Therefore this is not a syllogism.

No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

MtG plays chess too; he thinks that the Sicilian Defense's only advantage is that it can get so weird the Black player can wriggle out of the disadvantage generated by it. I know even less now than I did back then; I was brave enough to post and be wrong 'cause I was actually playing in some high-school level chess tournaments at the time and knew half a thing. Having not really played in 4 years, I wouldn't have even dared post now.

Hmm, speaking of story threads, want to fill us in on what the heck people are babbling about in
As it were on the forth day of the third month, all ****ers shall cease from upskirting!
