It is a good question SD, I think they become indoctrinated by what they hear off TV and radio and think there is nothing else out there. What a little bit of reconnaissance could do...

I can understand teenagers (and the older generation) going mad over film stars and going to watch their movies no matter how crap they are. I have known myself to go and watch a few films because of the actress. You get the eye candy at least.

I don't understand teenagers getting their parents to pay for drivel songs. I think Girls Aloud are attractive, but there is no way on Earth I would buy their singles.

I guess it is just hysteria and fad, something I have never understood. If I don't like something I'm not going to buy it just because everyone else is.

Yes, I have had this Avril Lavigne argument with Stew and Iain. Yes, she may be nice, but if you think so, don't buy the sodding album, buy the poster or something. It amazes me sometimes

The music I purchase is based purely on what music I like, not on eyecandy. If you want eyecandy, buy a picture, download some porn or something of that nature.

Avril Lavigne!!!! Did you see her doing the Grammy anouncements?

She pronounced David Bowie name like "Bow" as in bend over at the waist to applause, instead of "bow" as in Bow and arrow.

Er, both instances of "Bow" are pronounced the same way.

I'm actually not sure myself of how to pronounce Bowie's name, and I've got thirteen of his albums.

that depends, when i was a nipper (early 80's) i was into The Jam, then i read an interview with Paul Weller (the lead singer) where it asked him his main influences, next thing i'm 11 years old buying Otis Reading, Wilson Pickett, Small Faces records..sometimes popular music can be a catalyst, if a couple of kids take the time to look at the Atomic Kitten single and wonder what the the original sounded like then thats got to be a good thing.

For the record, Gay clubs are just awful places.

It's just freaky, it really is.

And I don't mean that as a slam to gay people, obviously -- but the people who go to those clubs, gagh!

Can't think of any horrible covers off the top of my head that haven't been mentioned though...

I agree with everything except Pop songs get criticized just because they are in the mainstream. Some mainstream singers are talented and can sing well (even though I may not like them all). For me, it eventually boils down to my preference. If I like what I hear, I will download the cd (what me buy? ) If I don't then I guess I won't. Whether it's mainstrem or underground.

Sometimes I wanna smack people who go thru so much effort making fun of boybands and other artists that get stigmatized with undesirable criticism. If you don't like their music just ignore them. Don't call them names. Beside If you think you can do better you should be on the stand not them.

I don't think anyone's mentioned Madhouse, who just baffle me. I'm no Madonna fan to begin with, but what the hell is the point of putting out and entire CD of Madonna covers that are slavishly faithful to the dubious orginials -- except that they strip away what little artistry and originality was there to begin with? Their "Like a Prayer" is my current frontrunner in the "Most Pointless Song Ever" sweepstakes. Blech.

But my nominees for best covers include, besides those mentioned here, Sonic Youth's cover of the Carpenters' "Superstar" and Aaron Neville's cover of Randy Newman's "Louisiana 1927."

Why on Earth would I want to become a Crappy Popstar?

I know a lot of bands that are better and more original, but they don't get the exposure that Pop Idols get (for numerous reasons).
